Book excerpt: Scientist, citizen, artist-the Renaissance man of India Homi Jehangir Bhabha, one of India's outstanding scientists, shouldered the beginnings of India's nuclear programme. He was the first chairman of India's Atomic Energy Commission, and the builder of two of India's most significant scientific institutions-the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and the Atomic Energy Establishment, renamed Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in 1966. A Masterful Spirit presents the life and achievements of the man through previously unpublished letters, and photographs and paintings, and the recollections of his family, friends, colleagues and students. Designed to convey the flavour of Bhabha's life and times, this book tells the inspiring story of a man whom Sir C.V. Raman described as 'the modern equivalent of Leonardo da Vinci'. It acquaints us with the many facets of Bhabha's personality: physicist, institution-builder, concerned citizen, artist, connoisseur of the arts, designer of gardens and, above all, a charismatic and compassionate human being.

Download or read book The Location of Culture written by Homi K. Bhabha and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Location of Culture, Homi Bhabha sets out the conceptual imperative and political consistency of the post-colonial intellectual project. In a provocative series of essays, Bhabha explains why the post-colonial critique has altered forever the landscape of postmodern discourse. Location of Cultureexamines the displacement of the colonist's ligitimizing cultural authority; the margins of Western "civility" put under colonial stress; the complex cultural and political boundaries which exist between the spheres of gender, race, class, and sexuality; the place of language, psychic affect, and narrative discourse in the construction of social authority and cultural identity. Bhabha investigates a diverse range of texts in a bold attempt to specify the moment and the place of both colonial and post-colonial perspectives. He discusses writers such as Toni Morrison, Nadine Gordimer, and Salman Rushdie; historical documents such as those on the Indian Mutiny and by missionaries; race riots and nationhood; and he builds on the work of important cultural theorists such as Frantz Fanon and Edward Said.
Download or read book The Low frequency Radio Universe written by Homi Jehangir Bhabha and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A strong resurgence of interest in low-frequency radio astronomy in the past few decades has led to addressing many of the outstanding and challenging astrophysical and technical problems and issues. The GMRT has been in operation for close to a decade. Early results have been reported from LOFAR. The next generation of telescopes such as the LWA, MWA, MeerKAT, ASKAP and SKA should provide exciting challenges, results, and opportunities. To discuss recent results and astrophysical problems as well as a range of technical issues at low radio frequencies, a conference and workshop was held at the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. This event commemorated the birth centenary of Dr. Homi J. Bhabha, who contributed immensely in both the sciences and the arts. There were approximately 130 participants from over a dozen countries. The conference brought together experts with a wide range of interests from major observatories and institutions across the world as well as younger research workers largely from within India. There were over 100 papers presented, including several extensive reviews, on a large variety of topics including low-frequency surveys and cosmology, extragalactic neutral hydrogen and OH, extragalactic radio sources, clusters of galaxies, our Galaxy, pulsars, transients and high-energy sources, Sun and planetary studies, and instrumentation and techniques. The book provides an overview of research at low radio frequencies and should be of interest to a wide spectrum of students and researchers.

Download or read book The Making of the Indian Atomic Bomb written by Itty Abraham and published by Zed Books. This book was released on 1998-09 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1974 India exploded an atomic device. In May 1998 the new BJP Government exploded several more, encountering in the process domestic plaudits but international condemnation and a nuclear arms race in South Asia. This book is the first serious historical account of the development of nuclear power in India and of how the bomb came to be made. The author questions orthodox interpretations implying that it was a product of the Indo-Pakistani conflict. Instead, he suggests that the explosions had nothing to do with national security as conventionally understood. Instead he demonstrates the linkages that existed between the two apparently separate discourses of national security and national development, and explores their common underlying basis in postcolonial states. The result is a remarkable book that breaks new ground in integrating comparative politics, international relations and cultural studies.
