Book excerpt: Contracts: Law in Action (CLA) is unique among contracts casebooks for two reasons. First, it has a distinct methodological commitment -- the "law in action" approach pioneered by, among others, authors Macaulay and Whitford. CLA provides unique contextual background into such chestnut cases as Parker v. Twentieth Century Fox and Hoffman v. Red Owl. This context allows teachers to explore such issues as to where cases come from and what impact they have on the parties and others. Second, unlike many other casebooks CLA offers detailed and challenging problem sets to help students develop both the basic analytic skills they need to succeed and the larger modes of inquiry that distinguish the best lawyers. CLA is the rare book that marries theory and practice in an engaging and accessible way.

Book excerpt: Contracts: Cases, Text, and Problems promotes deep learning and formative assessment by combining introductory text, cases and statutes, and numerous exercises. The content and organization of the third edition is designed to maximize each student's comprehension and development of analytic skills. Charts and diagrams provide additional guidance to visual learners. This casebook introduces students to contract law and legal method in an engaging, accessible manner that mirrors the way an associate would approach a problem in a law office: Introductory text and excerpts from scholarly articles present an overview to each topic by providing context and perspectives in preparation for examining primary law; Carefully selected cases and statutes invite more focused exploration of each legal topic; and Numerous exercises and 33 practice essay examination questions require students to apply recently studied law to new facts, leading to a deep, working knowledge of the material. This casebook lends itself to formative assessment, much of it self-guided. The Teacher's Manual includes an analysis of each of the numerous foundational exercises in the book, facilitating faculty-led discussion of the exercises in class. Appendix 3 of the Casebook sets forth model answers to the dozens of practice essay examinations, enabling students to take those exams on their own and compare their answers to the model answers. The third edition combines classic cases, such as the Carbolic Smoke Ball case, with more recent cases, including many published within the previous decade and some appearing as recently as 2023. It includes the Supreme Court's embrace of disgorgement of profits in an interstate-compact case, exploration of problems associated with electronic contracting, coverage of California's Right to Repair Act, and an updated discussion of the Federal Arbitration Act's preemption of state law defenses to class actions waivers in arbitration clauses.

Book Notes on Introductory Combinatorics

Download or read book Notes on Introductory Combinatorics written by George Polya and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the winter of 1978, Professor George P61ya and I jointly taught Stanford University's introductory combinatorics course. This was a great opportunity for me, as I had known of Professor P61ya since having read his classic book, How to Solve It, as a teenager. Working with P6lya, who ·was over ninety years old at the time, was every bit as rewarding as I had hoped it would be. His creativity, intelligence, warmth and generosity of spirit, and wonderful gift for teaching continue to be an inspiration to me. Combinatorics is one of the branches of mathematics that play a crucial role in computer sCience, since digital computers manipulate discrete, finite objects. Combinatorics impinges on computing in two ways. First, the properties of graphs and other combinatorial objects lead directly to algorithms for solving graph-theoretic problems, which have widespread application in non-numerical as well as in numerical computing. Second, combinatorial methods provide many analytical tools that can be used for determining the worst-case and expected performance of computer algorithms. A knowledge of combinatorics will serve the computer scientist well. Combinatorics can be classified into three types: enumerative, eXistential, and constructive. Enumerative combinatorics deals with the counting of combinatorial objects. Existential combinatorics studies the existence or nonexistence of combinatorial configurations.
