Download or read book Homeward Bound through Twomey written by Lee Ann Mayberry and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014-11-21 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is 1930 and Defellow Ford knows hunger is not just a problem for his family. But things are about to go from bad to worse when—during a squirrel hunting expedition—Defellow stumbles onto a murdered hobo. After Defellow robs the man, he has no idea that an evil shadow is already making its presence known in Twomey, Tennessee. Defellow summons a deputy constable and takes him to the crime scene, but he is shocked to discover the body is missing. It is only after the brutal beating and rape of a local girl that the Twomey community begins to notice a rampage of crime in the area that includes the murder of three transients. As prejudice and false accusations force the Ford family members to look inward, each struggles to survive tests of their faith, perseverance, and hope for the future. In this gripping mystery set during the Great Depression, suspicion grows as evil dominates a 1930 Tennessee railroad community and all its residents begin to doubt the presence of a compassionate God.

Book Women and Children First

Download or read book Women and Children First written by Robin Miskolcze and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a crucial time in American history, narratives of women in command or imperiled at sea contributed to the construction of a national rhetoric. Robin Miskolcze makes her case by way of careful readings of images of women at sea before the Civil War in her book Women and Children First. Though the sea has traditionally been interpreted as the province of men, women have gone to sea as mothers, wives, figureheads, and slaves. In fact, in the nineteenth century, women at sea contributed to the formation of an ethics of survival that helped to define American ideals. This study examines, often for the first time, images of women at sea in antebellum narratives ranging from novels and sermons to newspaper accounts and lithographs. Anglo-American women in antebellum sea narratives are often portrayed as models of American ideals derived from women’s seemingly innate Christian self-sacrifice. Miskolcze argues that these ideals, in conjunction with the maritime directive of “women and children first” during sea disasters, in turn defined a new masculine individualism, one that was morally minded, rooted in Christian principles, and dedicated to preserving virtue. Further, Miskolcze contends that without the antebellum sea narratives portraying the Christian self-sacrifice of women, the abolitionist cause would have suffered. African American women appealed to the directive of “women and children first” to make manifest their own womanhood, and by extension, their own humanity.

Book Labor Law in America

Download or read book Labor Law in America written by Christopher L. Tomlins and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Labor history and legal history have traditionally stood as separate disciplines. But recent scholarship has suggested the benefits of an interdisciplinary approach. In Labor Law in America Christopher L. Tomlins and Andrew J. King bring together eleven leading scholars to explore more completely than any previously published work the range of labor's legal experience in America. The contributors present new findings on topics ranging from the beginnings of wage labor in colonial America to the battered conditions of unions in the late twentieth century, from the stirrings of organization among journeymen in the early republic through battles over unemployment relief and labor standards in the Depression. They chart the "strange career" of master and servant law during the nineteenth century, the criminalization of vagrancy in the name of free contract, and the implications of constitutional structure and judicial ascendancy for labor strategy. They throw old interpretations into sharp relief by changing our perspectives on familiar topics - pointing out, for example, the impeccably republican reasoning behind antebellum criminal-conspiracy prosecutions or underlining the racial and gender exclusiveness of free-labor ideology. Labor Law in America amply demonstrates that labor law history is emerging as one of the most rewarding ways to understand the interaction of law, state, and society.
