Book Erdos Space and Homeomorphism Groups of Manifolds

Download or read book Erdos Space and Homeomorphism Groups of Manifolds written by Jan Jakobus Dijkstra and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2010 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let M be either a topological manifold, a Hilbert cube manifold, or a Menger manifold and let D be an arbitrary countable dense subset of M. Consider the topological group H(M,D) which consists of all autohomeomorphisms of M that map D onto itself equipped with the compact-open topology. We present a complete solution to the topological classification problem for H(M,D) as follows. If M is a one-dimensional topological manifold, then we proved in an earlier paper that H(M,D) is homeomorphic to Qω, the countable power of the space of rational numbers. In all other cases we find in this paper that H(M,D) is homeomorphic to the famed Erdős space E E, which consists of the vectors in Hilbert space l2 with rational coordinates. We obtain the second result by developing topological characterizations of Erdős space.

Book Groups of Circle Diffeomorphisms

Download or read book Groups of Circle Diffeomorphisms written by Andrés Navas and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-06-30 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years scholars from a variety of branches of mathematics have made several significant developments in the theory of group actions. Groups of Circle Diffeomorphisms systematically explores group actions on the simplest closed manifold, the circle. As the group of circle diffeomorphisms is an important subject in modern mathematics, this book will be of interest to those doing research in group theory, dynamical systems, low dimensional geometry and topology, and foliation theory. The book is mostly self-contained and also includes numerous complementary exercises, making it an excellent textbook for undergraduate and graduate students.

Book The Wild World of 4 Manifolds

Download or read book The Wild World of 4 Manifolds written by Alexandru Scorpan and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2005-05-10 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What a wonderful book! I strongly recommend this book to anyone, especially graduate students, interested in getting a sense of 4-manifolds. --MAA Reviews The book gives an excellent overview of 4-manifolds, with many figures and historical notes. Graduate students, nonexperts, and experts alike will enjoy browsing through it. -- Robion C. Kirby, University of California, Berkeley This book offers a panorama of the topology of simply connected smooth manifolds of dimension four. Dimension four is unlike any other dimension; it is large enough to have room for wild things to happen, but small enough so that there is no room to undo the wildness. For example, only manifolds of dimension four can exhibit infinitely many distinct smooth structures. Indeed, their topology remains the least understood today. To put things in context, the book starts with a survey of higher dimensions and of topological 4-manifolds. In the second part, the main invariant of a 4-manifold--the intersection form--and its interaction with the topology of the manifold are investigated. In the third part, as an important source of examples, complex surfaces are reviewed. In the final fourth part of the book, gauge theory is presented; this differential-geometric method has brought to light how unwieldy smooth 4-manifolds truly are, and while bringing new insights, has raised more questions than answers. The structure of the book is modular, organized into a main track of about two hundred pages, augmented by extensive notes at the end of each chapter, where many extra details, proofs and developments are presented. To help the reader, the text is peppered with over 250 illustrations and has an extensive index.

Book Knots and Links

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dale Rolfsen

  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 0821834363
  • Pages : 458 pages

Download or read book Knots and Links written by Dale Rolfsen and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rolfsen's beautiful book on knots and links can be read by anyone, from beginner to expert, who wants to learn about knot theory. Beginners find an inviting introduction to the elements of topology, emphasizing the tools needed for understanding knots, the fundamental group and van Kampen's theorem, for example, which are then applied to concrete problems, such as computing knot groups. For experts, Rolfsen explains advanced topics, such as the connections between knot theory and surgery and how they are useful to understanding three-manifolds. Besides providing a guide to understanding knot theory, the book offers 'practical' training. After reading it, you will be able to do many things: compute presentations of knot groups, Alexander polynomials, and other invariants; perform surgery on three-manifolds; and visualize knots and their complements. It is characterized by its hands-on approach and emphasis on a visual, geometric understanding. Rolfsen offers invaluable insight and strikes a perfect balance between giving technical details and offering informal explanations. The illustrations are superb, and a wealth of examples are included. Now back in print by the AMS, the book is still a standard reference in knot theory. It is written in a remarkable style that makes it useful for both beginners and researchers. Particularly noteworthy is the table of knots and links at the end. This volume is an excellent introduction to the topic and is suitable as a textbook for a course in knot theory or 3-manifolds. Other key books of interest on this topic available from the AMS are ""The Shoelace Book: A Mathematical Guide to the Best (and Worst) Ways to Lace your Shoes"" and ""The Knot Book.""

Book A Primer on Mapping Class Groups

Download or read book A Primer on Mapping Class Groups written by Benson Farb and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the mapping class group Mod(S) is a classical topic that is experiencing a renaissance. It lies at the juncture of geometry, topology, and group theory. This book explains as many important theorems, examples, and techniques as possible, quickly and directly, while at the same time giving full details and keeping the text nearly self-contained. The book is suitable for graduate students. A Primer on Mapping Class Groups begins by explaining the main group-theoretical properties of Mod(S), from finite generation by Dehn twists and low-dimensional homology to the Dehn-Nielsen-Baer theorem. Along the way, central objects and tools are introduced, such as the Birman exact sequence, the complex of curves, the braid group, the symplectic representation, and the Torelli group. The book then introduces Teichmüller space and its geometry, and uses the action of Mod(S) on it to prove the Nielsen-Thurston classification of surface homeomorphisms. Topics include the topology of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces, the connection with surface bundles, pseudo-Anosov theory, and Thurston's approach to the classification.

Book Decompositions of Manifolds

Download or read book Decompositions of Manifolds written by Robert J. Daverman and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decomposition theory studies decompositions, or partitions, of manifolds into simple pieces, usually cell-like sets. Since its inception in 1929, the subject has become an important tool in geometric topology. The main goal of the book is to help students interested in geometric topology to bridge the gap between entry-level graduate courses and research at the frontier as well as to demonstrate interrelations of decomposition theory with other parts of geometric topology. With numerous exercises and problems, many of them quite challenging, the book continues to be strongly recommended to everyone who is interested in this subject. The book also contains an extensive bibliography and a useful index of key words, so it can also serve as a reference to a specialist.

Book An Introduction to Manifolds

Download or read book An Introduction to Manifolds written by Loring W. Tu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-05 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manifolds, the higher-dimensional analogs of smooth curves and surfaces, are fundamental objects in modern mathematics. Combining aspects of algebra, topology, and analysis, manifolds have also been applied to classical mechanics, general relativity, and quantum field theory. In this streamlined introduction to the subject, the theory of manifolds is presented with the aim of helping the reader achieve a rapid mastery of the essential topics. By the end of the book the reader should be able to compute, at least for simple spaces, one of the most basic topological invariants of a manifold, its de Rham cohomology. Along the way, the reader acquires the knowledge and skills necessary for further study of geometry and topology. The requisite point-set topology is included in an appendix of twenty pages; other appendices review facts from real analysis and linear algebra. Hints and solutions are provided to many of the exercises and problems. This work may be used as the text for a one-semester graduate or advanced undergraduate course, as well as by students engaged in self-study. Requiring only minimal undergraduate prerequisites, 'Introduction to Manifolds' is also an excellent foundation for Springer's GTM 82, 'Differential Forms in Algebraic Topology'.

Book Structure and Regularity of Group Actions on One Manifolds

Download or read book Structure and Regularity of Group Actions on One Manifolds written by Sang-hyun Kim and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-19 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the theory of optimal and critical regularities of groups of diffeomorphisms, from the classical work of Denjoy and Herman, up through recent advances. Beginning with an investigation of regularity phenomena for single diffeomorphisms, the book goes on to describes a circle of ideas surrounding Filipkiewicz's Theorem, which recovers the smooth structure of a manifold from its full diffeomorphism group. Topics covered include the simplicity of homeomorphism groups, differentiability of continuous Lie group actions, smooth conjugation of diffeomorphism groups, and the reconstruction of spaces from group actions. Various classical and modern tools are developed for controlling the dynamics of general finitely generated group actions on one-dimensional manifolds, subject to regularity bounds, including material on Thompson's group F, nilpotent groups, right-angled Artin groups, chain groups, finitely generated groups with prescribed critical regularities, and applications to foliation theory and the study of mapping class groups. The book will be of interest to researchers in geometric group theory.

Book Discrete Groups in Space and Uniformization Problems

Download or read book Discrete Groups in Space and Uniformization Problems written by B. Apanasov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1991-06-30 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revised and substantially enlarged edition of the Russian book Discrete transformation groups and manifold structures published by Nauka in 1983, this volume presents a comprehensive treatment of the geometric theory of discrete groups and the associated tessellations of the underlying space. Also dealt with in depth are geometric and conformal structures on manifolds, with particular emphasis on hyperbolic n-dimensional manifolds. A detailed account of the geometric and analytic properties of geometrically-finite Mobius groups in n-dimensional space is given and this forms the basis of the subsequent analysis. Emphasis is placed on the geometrical aspects and on the universal constraints which must be satisfied by all tessellations and structures on manifolds.
