Book excerpt: Written in Spanish by an experienced instructor, this textbook introduces students with no prior background in linguistics to the syntax of Spanish, exploring the building blocks of complex linguistic expressions. Variations across Spanish are highlighted and varieties spoken by bilinguals are included. New concepts are clearly presented through a gradual progression from simpler to more complex concepts, with definitions of key terms highlighted in boxes. Recent theoretical developments are presented in a theory-neutral framework, offering students a balanced perspective. Chapter learning objectives, numerous detailed examples, and summaries, enable students to build a solid knowledge and understanding of syntactic ideas from scratch. Both advanced and introductory exercises are included in every chapter, allowing students at all levels to put concepts into practice. Further reading suggestions, and expansion boxes highlight more complex developments, providing students with a platform for further exploration. This is an essential resource for introductory courses on Spanish syntax and linguistics.

Book Applied Correspondence Analysis

Download or read book Applied Correspondence Analysis written by Sten-Erik Clausen and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1998-06 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides readers with a simple, non-technical introduction to correspondence analysis (CA), a technique for summarily describing the relationships among categorical variables in large tables. It begins with the history and logic of CA. The author shows readers the steps to the analysis: category profiles and masses are computed, the distances between these points calculated and the best-fitting space of n-dimensions located. There are glossaries on appropriate programs from SAS and SPSS for doing CA and the book concludes with a comparison of CA and log-linear models.

Book Geographies of Philological Knowledge

Download or read book Geographies of Philological Knowledge written by Nadia R. Altschul and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geographies of Philological Knowledge examines the relationship between medievalism and colonialism in the nineteenth-century Hispanic American context through the striking case of the Creole Andrés Bello (1781–1865), a Venezuelan grammarian, editor, legal scholar, and politician, and his lifelong philological work on the medieval heroic narrative that would later become Spain’s national epic, the Poem of the Cid. Nadia R. Altschul combs Bello’s study of the poem and finds throughout it evidence of a “coloniality of knowledge.” Altschul reveals how, during the nineteenth century, the framework for philological scholarship established in and for core European nations—France, England, and especially Germany—was exported to Spain and Hispanic America as the proper way of doing medieval studies. She argues that the global designs of European philological scholarship are conspicuous in the domain of disciplinary historiography, especially when examining the local history of a Creole Hispanic American like Bello, who is neither fully European nor fully alien to European culture. Altschul likewise highlights Hispanic America’s intellectual internalization of coloniality and its understanding of itself as an extension of Europe. A timely example of interdisciplinary history, interconnected history, and transnational study, Geographies of Philological Knowledge breaks with previous nationalist and colonialist histories and thus forges a new path for the future of medieval studies.
