Book excerpt: In September 2009, my home for the past year was a no-tell hotel, so crime-ridden police were holding their nightly roll call in the hotel’s parking lot. Police were called to this hotel over one hundred times just that summer. I came home my last day there to find a SWAT team arresting my neighbor for (armed) robbery in the drug store across the street. I moved out then and there, fearing for my safety. The only option available to me at the time was to put myself out on the street. Homeless Not Helpless is my true story loosely based on a journal I kept during my homeless experience. With my protocol and (good) plan, I rose from the hole I was in, with my goal being to move to Franklin, Indiana, to be close to my son, who was in high school at the time. The whole ordeal exacerbated my existing PTSD condition. Still, I hope this truly amazing story will inspire whoever reads it. I was inspired to create this book by the rock band REO Speedwagon’s song “Keep on Rollin’.” My mission statement is to give a free copy of the book to every homeless man, woman, and child I can find out there.

Homeless Not Hopeless explores the role social networks play in the daily survival of homeless Latino and African American men. Using a qualitative research design, author Molina-Jackson observes how these men initiate, participate in, and maintain social networks and how these networks function. The findings support a more empowering view of homeless men as active, rational, and competent actors engaged in negotiating their social world. Members rely on social networks composed of a hierarchy of casual and intimate affiliations. The networks of Americanized Latinos and African Americans facilitate their integration into a subculture of street life, while those of recent-immigrant Latinos revolve around their struggles to find work, avoid deportation, and enlist the support of paisanos.

He was touched by the kindness of strangers again and again. John has an excellent memory and is a natural storyteller. Told from the vantage point of thirty years of personal experience helping homeless people in a number of settings, these adventures largely took place in midtown Manhattan in the early 90's. Over a seventeen-year period, our singularly successful approach was dismantled "slow-mo" by way of political advocacy and media complicity. We had decried the housing approach, frustrated that it was going nowhere, instead calling for employment programming. However, what is referred to as "The Board," the putative head of the homeless industry, would have none of it. We were accused of heinous crimes, all made up. For it all, even after those charges were proven to be "fanciful," the damage had been done - we were taken down and our funding went right into the coffers of The Board, while the homeless, unemployed again, were back on the street. Never told were the reasons for what one investigator called our "unparalleled success." Why were we able to bring thousands of homeless men and women indoors? Why were we able to help so many into employment? What can be done to stem today's tide of homelessness? Our programs drew the attention of a number of important New Yorkers, pro and con among them, but in the end, they came to a halt. While this is a story that was partially documented in the media, staccato style, still it has remained a story never fully told.

More and more, these city developments are not simply accepted passively; rather, resistance by organized homeless groups--civil protests, squatting, and legal advocacy--spread as conditions of everyday life deteriorate for the very poor. Out of Place: Homeless Mobilizations, Subcities, and Contested Landscapes details the development of two organized homeless resistances in two different cities. From the redevelopment protesters and squatting activities of the Student-Homeless Alliance in San Jose to the squatter camps of Tranquility City in Chicago, the differences and similarities between both groups are highlighted within the context of city redevelopment policies. Wright argues for considering homelessness not merely as an issue for social welfare, but first and foremost as a land use issue directly connected to issues of gentrification, displacement, and the cultural imaginings of what the city should look like by those who have the power to shape its development. How the homeless combat the restructurings of everyday life, how they attempt to establish a "place" is understood within the context of tactical resistances.
