Book excerpt: "The unique laboratory companion text Materials and Mechanics: Laboratory Experiments is comprised of an introductory chapter on safety protocols, followed by seven experiments in materials science engineering and solid mechanics. The book guides students through the experiments, and teaches them to calculate and report results and write follow-up reports. Chapters include theory components with the equations students need to calculate different properties. In addition, all chapters feature in-class problems to increase comprehension and retention of information related to the experiments, and data sheets to be used for recording purposes in the laboratory. Materials and Mechanics: Laboratory Experiments includes experiments on beam deflection, tensile testing, hardness testing, and impact testing. In addition, students will conduct experiments in heat treatment and qualitative metallographic analysis, torsion, and measurement of strain. Materials and Mechanics: Laboratory Experiments supports the content of an in-class text, and clarifies and facilitates laboratory work. It can be used as a standalone textbook. Jharna Chaudhuri holds a Ph.D. in mechanics and materials from Rutgers University. She is a professor and chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas Tech University. She served as a Faculty Research Associate at Wright Patterson Air Force Base and Naval Research Laboratory, and has collaborated with Boeing and Cessna. Her research interests include nano-materials, high resolution transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. Archis Marathe holds an M.S. in mechanical engineering from Texas Tech University, where he is currently a Ph.D. candidate doing research in the field of nanotechnology. He is also an electron microscopist and is in charge of the Transmission Electron Microscopy facility for the department."

Book Home Mechanics for Amateurs Classic Reprint

Download or read book Home Mechanics for Amateurs Classic Reprint written by George M. Hopkins and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Mechanics for Amateurs Special interest always attaches to a post humous work. It is not always, however, that a work of this character possesses equal merit with one entirely completed before the death of the author. As a rule such works have not had the advantage of the final perusal and correction by the author. Such has not, however, been the case in the present instance, for the following work by the late George M. Hopkins, was completed before his death. Tl ere is no doubt, however, that this volume will come as a surprise to thousands who have closely followed Mr. Hopkins' work, and who have enjoyed making the many experiments described by him. The present volume contains much matter which has never before appeared in print, and some articles which have already been published in the Scientific American. The object of the work is to furnish food for thought to the amateur, and to give him suggestions whereby he may pass many pleasant hours in his work-shop. Mr. Hopkins was an expert mechanic. One of his chief pleasures was to make experiments at his home in his well equipped work-shop and laboratory, and the work described in the present volume is nearly all the result of experiments made by him during such "idle" hours. Book Mechanics of Materials Laboratory Course

Download or read book Mechanics of Materials Laboratory Course written by Ghatu Subhash and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to provide lecture notes (theory) and experimental design of major concepts typically taught in most Mechanics of Materials courses in a sophomore- or junior-level Mechanical or Civil Engineering curriculum. Several essential concepts that engineers encounter in practice, such as statistical data treatment, uncertainty analysis, and Monte Carlo simulations, are incorporated into the experiments where applicable, and will become integral to each laboratory assignment. Use of common strain (stress) measurement techniques, such as strain gages, are emphasized. Application of basic electrical circuits, such as Wheatstone bridge for strain measurement, and use of load cells, accelerometers, etc., are employed in experiments. Stress analysis under commonly applied loads such as axial loading (compression and tension), shear loading, flexural loading (cantilever and four-point bending), impact loading, adhesive strength, creep, etc., are covered. LabVIEW software with relevant data acquisition (DAQ) system is used for all experiments. Two final projects each spanning 2‒3 weeks are included: (i) flexural loading with stress intensity factor determination and (ii) dynamic stress wave propagation in a slender rod and determination of the stress‒strain curves at high strain rates. The book provides theoretical concepts that are pertinent to each laboratory experiment and prelab assignment that a student should complete to prepare for the laboratory. Instructions for securing off-the-shelf components to design each experiment and their assembly (with figures) are provided. Calibration procedure is emphasized whenever students assemble components or design experiments. Detailed instructions for conducting experiments and table format for data gathering are provided. Each lab assignment has a set of questions to be answered upon completion of experiment and data analysis. Lecture notes provide detailed instructions on how to use LabVIEW software for data gathering during the experiment and conduct data analysis.

Book Soil Mechanics Laboratory Manual

Download or read book Soil Mechanics Laboratory Manual written by Braja M. Das and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its sixth edition, Soil Mechanics Laboratory Manual is designed for the junior-level soil mechanics/geotechnical engineering laboratory course in civil engineering programs. It includes eighteen laboratory procedures that cover the essential properties of soils and their behavior under stress and strain, as well as explanations, procedures, sample calculations, and completed and blank data sheets. Written by Braja M. Das, respected author of market-leading texts in geotechnical and foundation engineering, this unique manual provides a detailed discussion of standard soil classification systems used by engineers: the AASHTO Classification System and the Unified Soil Classification System, which both conform to recent ASTM specifications. To improve ease and accessibility of use, this new edition includes not only the stand-alone version of the Soil Mechanics Laboratory Test software but also ready-made Microsoft ExcelRG templates designed to perform the same calculations. With the convenience of point and click data entry, these interactive programs can be used to collect, organize, and evaluate data for each of the book's eighteen labs. The resulting tables can be printed with their corresponding graphs, creating easily generated reports that display and analyze data obtained from the manual's laboratory tests.FeaturesBL Includes sample calculations and graphs relevant to each laboratory testBL Supplies blank tables (that accompany each test) for laboratory use and report preparationBL Contains a complete chapter on soil classification (Chapter 9)BL Provides references and three useful appendices:Appendix A: Weight-Volume RelationshipsAppendix B: Data Sheets for Laboratory ExperimentsAppendix C: Data Sheets for Preparation of Laboratory Reports
