Book excerpt: “A joyful, wildly imaginative book” —The New York Times It’s Rashin’s first day of school in America! Everything is a different shape than what she’s used to: from the foods on her breakfast plate to the letters in the books! And the kids' families are from all over! The new teacher asks each child to imagine the shape of home on a map. Rashin knows right away what she’ll say: Iran looks like a cat! What will the other kids say? What about the country YOUR family is originally from? Is it shaped like an apple? A boot? A torch? Open this book to join Rashin in discovering the true things that shape a place called home. P R A I S E ★ “A creative, child-centered picture book about finding a new home after immigration. Ebulliently illustrated.” —Kirkus (starred) ★ “It’s hard to find a more joyful take on the first day of school in a new country than that found in Kheiriyeh’s new work.” —School Library Journal (starred) ★ “Exuberant...A warm and welcoming story about a group of children who may have come from other places but have found a classroom that is ‘shaped like a home.’” —Booklist (starred)

Book The Familiar Stranger Who Lives In Our Home

Download or read book The Familiar Stranger Who Lives In Our Home written by Robert Betterton and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-04 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nancy Reagan. David Hyde Pierce. Princess Yasmin. We share something with all three. That's why you have this book in your hand. Each has had a loved one ravaged by Alzheimer's Disease. We watched them morph into complete strangers who continue to look the same. Famous or not, the five million Alzheimer's victims in this country and their families are people trying to get through this tragedy. Whether beginning the search for diagnosis, adjusting to its reality, or wondering if you are doing the right thing, you are eager for answers. Whether the victim is in the early, moderate or severe stage you have doubts. Been there and done that. To the astonishment of doctors, we kept my wife at home and thriving for thirteen years with moderate to severe Alzheimer's Disease. To do that takes dedication, planning and faith. However, we are ordinary people and we did it. Many of you can too. I wrote this book because this disease has touched nearly a hundred friends either as victims, relatives or caregivers. During one half hour at my fifty-fifth college reunion, I learned of three more stricken classmates. This book is for them, their friends, families, and you.

Book Coming Home to an Un familiar Country

Download or read book Coming Home to an Un familiar Country written by Mariusz Dzięglewski and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-30 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the process of return migration, from a holistic and policy-oriented perspective. Studies in return migration, which remains a vibrant field for academics, researchers, and policy-makers, have provided a large body of knowledge on particular issues, but generally fall along two lines: they are either broad macro analyses and models (especially economic ones) or narrow ethnographic views (anthropological, sociological, or psychological). This volume attempts to chart a course between these two approaches, combining returning migrants’ life trajectories, as seen by themselves, with analysis of the structural processes that have taken place in the last three decades in Europe and in Poland, as a new EU country. In analyzing the social and cultural changes reflected in the biographies of returning migrants, the author uses a framework based on an original synthesis of Alfred Schütz’s phenomenological approach, focusing on the returnees’ “life words,” with the social realism of Margaret Archer, focusing on the concerns and projects of individuals interacting with social and cultural structures.

Book Strangers in a Familiar Land

Download or read book Strangers in a Familiar Land written by James A. Blumenstock and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-04-28 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, many Christians have existed on the margins of society; deviants and strangers in lands they call home. To survive, they have had to construct alternate identities that not only make sense of their religious experiences and beliefs but also equip them to successfully negotiate their social worlds. In Thailand, a nation where social identities are thoroughly intertwined with Buddhist religious adherence, Christians must come to terms with such a marginalized existence. By leaving Buddhism and adopting what is considered a foreign faith, Christian converts become deviants to "normal" Thai identity and belonging. In response, they have discovered creative solutions for traversing this complex terrain of marginalization. This book presents a deep exploration of the phenomenon of marginalization as experienced by Thai Christian converts. In it, readers will follow participants through the heights of transformative religious experience, the lows of severe social displacement, the tensions of managing two disparate lifeworlds and two conflicting selves, and the comfort and joy of finding a new place to call home. In the end, the reader will gain deep insight into what it is like to successfully navigate a minority religious identity on the margins of society.
