Book excerpt: The aim of the book is to supply a popular exposition of the Levitical rites and ceremonies, to trace their typical import and relations, and to set forth the great features of the Gospel as therein adumbrated by types of God's own choosing. It thus covers a field comparatively unoccupied, but one of much interest and importance. It professes to find in these divine appointments and directions a symbolic foreshowing of the whole plan of grace and salvation through Jesus Christ. -- From the Preface

Book Holy Spirit and Religious Experience in Christian Literature ca AD 90 200

Download or read book Holy Spirit and Religious Experience in Christian Literature ca AD 90 200 written by John Eifion Morgan-Wynne and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Holy Spirit and Religious Experience' seeks to find out how far the centrality of the Holy Spirit in Christian experience during the earliest period of the church was maintained or diminished in the third to the fifth generations (ca. AD 90-200). Three themes are explored. First, the sense of encounter with the divine presence, the numinous, a sense of being caught up into the divine being or being overwhelmed by the One who is beyond us. Secondly, a sense of being illuminated in respect to the truth, given deeper understanding of God's purpose, whether for the individual or the congregation, or guided in decision-making. Thirdly, a sense of ethical empowerment, an awareness of being helped by divine power, assisted in a course of action or development of character, in grappling with temptation, or in the ultimate test of loyalty, martyrdom. This book is arranged geographically, from Syria and Asia Minor in the East to Rome and Gaul in the West, including North Africa and Egypt. Christian authors within these areas are examined chronologically, from the later New Testament writers through the second century to Clement of Alexandria and Tertullian of Carthage, for the evidence they supply. The variegated picture which emerges, it is contended, reflects second-century Christianity.

Book Holy Wells of Ireland

Download or read book Holy Wells of Ireland written by Celeste Ray and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2023-09-19 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The storied landscapes of Ireland are dotted with holy wells—hallowed springs, pools, ponds, and lakes credited with curative powers and often associated with Catholic and indigenous saints. While many of these sites have been recently lost to development, others are visited daily for devotions and remain the focus of annual community gatherings. Encouraging both their use and protection, Holy Wells of Ireland delves into these irreplaceable resources of spiritual, archaeological, and historical significance. Reserves of localized spiritual practices, holy wells are also ecosystems in themselves and provide habitats for rare and culturally meaningful flora and fauna. The shift toward a "post-Catholic" Ireland has prompted renewed interest in holy wells as popular domains with organic faith traditions. Of the roughly 3,000 holy wells documented across Ireland, some attract international pilgrims and others are stewarded by a single family. Featuring 140 color images, this remarkable volume shares the transdisciplinary work of contributors who study these wells through the overlapping lenses of anthropology, archaeology, art history, biomedicine, folklore, geography, history, and hydrology. Braiding community perspectives with those of scholars across academia, Holy Wells of Ireland considers Irish holy wells as a resilient feature of ever-evolving Irish Christianity, as inspiration to other faith traditions, as places of pilgrimage and healing, and as threatened biocultural resources.

Book Holy Walks

Download or read book Holy Walks written by Stephen C. Simon and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-07-02 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prayers that lead to a growing intimacy with God. Heart-learning, not just more head knowledge. Walking conversations with God. These are a few of the fruits produced by a spiritual practice called holy walks. Rooted in the ancient art of praying the Psalms, holy walks enrich our understanding and practice of prayer by integrating prayer-walking and learning the Psalms by heart. In a practical, deeply personal, and at times humorous manner, Steve Simon shares how holy walks have transformed his own prayer life and revitalized his walk with God—and how they can do the same for the reader. In addition to explaining the spiritual practice of holy walks, Holy Walks also provides an introduction to the book of Psalms, which will be especially valuable for those with limited knowledge of the Bible. Exploring five types of psalms, Holy Walks describes how God uses them to shape our heart in life-giving ways no matter what peaks we’re climbing or valleys we’re traversing. The book concludes with a discussion on what the Psalms teach about God’s relationship with us as our creator, leader, and rescuer.
