Book Knowing the Holy Spirit Through the Old Testament

Download or read book Knowing the Holy Spirit Through the Old Testament written by Christopher J. H. Wright and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2015-10-25 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We tend to think of the Holy Spirit as the straggler of the Trinity, a latecomer in God's interaction with the world. But our first introduction to the Holy Spirit is not the drama of Pentecost in the second chapter of Acts. We first meet the Holy Spirit in the second verse of the Bible, hovering there, speaking the world into existence. Christopher Wright begins here and traces the Holy Spirit through the pages of the Old Testament. We see the Third Person of the Trinity in the decrees of prophets and psalmists, in the actions of judges and craftspeople, in the anointing of kings and the promise of a new creation. Knowable and discernable in the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit is thus eminently knowable to us. The witness of the whole of Scripture, from its first pages to its last, directs us to a Holy Spirit empowering the people of God, and sustaining and renewing the face of the earth.

November Ist. FEAST OF ALL SAINTS. S early as the fourth century, there is evidence that the Eastern Church celebrated on the Octave of Whitsunday, a festival in commemoration of all the martys throughout the world. In the Western Church, the Feast of All Saints was not commonly observed before the ninth century, and the day then appointed was November ist. On this, the closing festival of her Christian year, the Church, after reckoning up her jewels, seems to say, "The time would fail us to tell of each saint individually, who from the beginning has fought the good fight, and kept the faith, and won the crown; look on them as one united whole, for that great "multitude which no man can number" are "all one in Christ Jesus." Patriarchs, prophets, apostles, martyrs--: unite their separate rays of light, and "declare the glory of God." To God alone be ascribed all their glory, for to God's grace each one owes his particular share of it. By God's grace, each one, sinner by nature, grew to be a saint, and to each of us poor exiles is the same grace offered, to enable us to follow them, as they followed the "King of Saints." The precepts to guide us to the Kingdom of Heaven are laid down in the Gospel for the week, and to encourage us in keeping them, S. Paul pictures to us "the cloud "of witnesses," who are watching, with loving eyes, our progress in the spiritual race, and assisting us by their examples and prayers. Of deep interest are we to them, for they, without us, "cannot be made perfect." When the Church militant has finished her warfare, then will that glorious vision be realised which was revealed to S. John, in Patmos, and...

Book Disciples Literal New Testament

Download or read book Disciples Literal New Testament written by Michael Magill and published by Reyma Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If You Love God's Word You Will Love This New Testament! The Disciples' Literal New Testament sets you free from our artificial 460 year old chapter and verse structure, replacing it with paragraphing that reflects the flow of thought in the original Greek writings. Paragraph headings make that flow of thought explicit to you, speeding your understanding of the NT books. This translation retains the writing style of the apostles themselves, rather than transforming their Greek ways of writing into an elegant or contemporary English writing style, as has been beautifully done so many times. It is the same translation as the author's New Testament TransLine, first published by Zondervan in 2002. Now you can read the New Testament as the original writers intended it, and see it with a clarity formerly available only to those who could carefully study their Greek New Testament. You can even see the difference in writing style between Matthew, Mark and Luke! Used along with your standard Bible version, you will profit from both methods of translation. *Easily grasp the relationship of the whole and the parts of each book with the big-picture overview outlines that use the words of the original author. *Gain quick insight into the flow of thought from descriptive paragraph headings that summarize the main point of each paragraph in its context. *You can visually follow the apostles' thinking because the 'Intelligent Paragraphing' visually displays their main and subordinate thoughts. *The hindrance to your understanding caused by our artificial chapter and verse structure is eliminated by paragraphing based on the Greek writings. *You will more fully appreciate the minds and thinking patterns and intent of the original writers because the translation corresponds more closely to their words and their grammar and their sentence structure. *Deepen and expand your understanding of the New Testament by meditating on the notes containing alternative renderings, explanations of what is being said, and different views of the meaning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barsauma was a fifth-century Syrian ascetic, archimandrite, and leader of monks, notorious for his extreme asceticism and violent anti-Jewish campaigns across the Holy Land. Although Barsauma was a powerful and revered figure in the Eastern church, modern scholarship has widely dismissed him as a thug of peripheral interest. Until now, only the most salacious bits of the Life of Barsauma—a fascinating collection of miracles that Barsauma undertook across the Near East—had been translated. This pioneering study includes the first full translation of the Life and a series of studies by scholars employing a range of methods to illuminate the text from different angles and contexts. This is the authoritative source on this influential figure in the history of the church and his life, travels, and relations with other religious groups.
