Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How yoga, aromatherapy, teas, and more can help you get and stay well. Stress. Fatigue. Depression. Sleeping problems. Issues with focus and concentration. Headaches. Substance abuse. These are all common problems that teenagers deal with. We have long been acquainted with the conventional treatments of therapy and prescription medications. It turns out there are also many complementary and alternative therapies available that have evidence-based track records of success. This book presents therapies based around the five senses—including acupressure, aromatherapy, yoga, sound/music therapy—to help teens with their mental health. Each chapter reviews the signs and symptoms of a problem and presents detailed treatment protocols and therapies. This all-inclusive book is one-stop shopping for teens and parents looking for new, synergistic, and different ways to handle life’s problems. As both a trained medical doctor on the faculty at Harvard Medical School and a noted complementary and alternative medicine specialist, Nada Milosavljevic brings a rich background of experience to this book.

Book Holistic Health in Children Conceptualization Assessment and Potential

Download or read book Holistic Health in Children Conceptualization Assessment and Potential written by Valerie Michaelson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the results of the Canadian Holistic Health in Children project. Rooted in an ancient concept, this study addresses some novel thinking surrounding the assessment of health and its determinants in adolescent populations. Holism refers to the assessment of complex systems as composite wholes, instead of or in addition to their constituent parts. This idea is rarely applied to the study of health in children, and its application to adolescent populations represents a potentially important gap in knowledge. It fills this gap by conducting a series of analyses in a mixed methods paradigm. Quantitatively, it develops new measures and analytic strategies to be used in the assessment of health and its determinants in adolescents, and then applied these a series of national and cross-national studies. Qualitatively, it explores the origins and models of health inferred from existing theory as well as quantitative findings with groups of young people, and captures the richness of their stories in recurrent themes and metaphor. This book outlines the basic elements of theory that underlie holistic understandings of adolescent health, quantitative and qualitative findings, and then presents and interprets the results and translates them into a series of practical recommendations.

Book Adolescence and Health

Download or read book Adolescence and Health written by Joav Merrick and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Think positive and not negative. For too long, the "deficiency" or "pathological" approach in understanding children and adolescents has been prevalent, but in recent years we have seen a greater interest in positive youth development programs with a shift from looking at the negative to turning the related programs and approach into something positive and highlighting the positive side of youth development. This has resulted in a focus on talents, strengths, interests and potential in order to facilitate a stronger and better youth development. Instead of viewing children and adolescents as "problems" or "issues" to be resolved, they are regarded as "resources" and "assets" to be developed. In particular, it is argued that it is important to nurture the developmental assets such as psychosocial skills in children and adolescents. The notion of positive youth development bears striking resemblance to the beliefs of Chinese medicine and holistic medicine, which maintains that when a person has inner strengths and talents, the chance of becoming ill will be reduced.

Book Mental and Holistic Health

Download or read book Mental and Holistic Health written by Joseph L. Calles and published by Nova Biomedical Books. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The search for optimal medications to support health has been part of human history since early times. One concept that was learned in early human civilisations was that medications can be harmful as well as potentially beneficial. Folklore and anecdotal information dominated human knowledge for more than 50,000 years until the work of the Chinese emperor, Shen-Nung (2737 BCE), who became a pristine, official, and erudite classifier of medicinal herbs. Pharmacologic management of human disease is clearly part of the 21st century medical armamentarium. Adolescents of the second decade of the 21st century and those adolescents soon to come will determine the outcome of our planet and life into the 22nd century. Pharmacology will remain an ever-growing part of clinicians' efforts to improve their patients' mental and medical health, but in this book, the authors' have taken a holistic approach, which they hope will please and interest the reader.

Book Mental Health for the Whole Child Moving Young Clients from Disease Disorder to Balance Wellness

Download or read book Mental Health for the Whole Child Moving Young Clients from Disease Disorder to Balance Wellness written by Scott M. Shannon and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2013-07-22 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leading pediatric psychiatrist shows clinicians a holistic, full-spectrum approach to children’s well-being. Every child possesses enormous untapped potential, and yet the number of kids suffering from mental illness today seems to creep ever upward. Depression, anxiety, ADHD, OCD, oppositional defiant disorder, anger issues—you name it—are increasingly prevalent, leaving clinician’s offices packed with worried parents and caregivers, wondering how they can help their children. In this book, child psychiatrist Scott Shannon offers a refreshing new path for practitioners who are eager for a more optimistic view of children’s mental health, one that emphasizes a child’s inherent resilience and resources over pathology and prescriptions. “What is mental health?” Shannon explores the fundamental question, showing that an innate desire for balance—a wholeness—between brain-body-mind lies at the heart of wellness. Such a balance can’t be achieved by medication alone, but requires a broad, full-spectrum understanding of children’s lives: their diet, social skills, sleep habits, their ability to self-regulate, to find meaning and purpose in life, and their family relationships. Stress, trauma, and poor nutrition are some of the most common barriers to wholeness in kids’ lives, and Shannon carefully examines these and other barriers, and what the latest discoveries in neuroplasticity and epigenetics tell us about their ability to overcome them. Readers will learn how to perform a different sort of assessment—one that identifies patterns of imbalance and obstacles to health in a child’s life—as well as how to build a meaningful, effective treatment plan around these deficits, and how clinicians can best position themselves to respond effectively. The second part of the book looks at eight of the most common childhood mental health issues—ADHD, depression, behavioral problems, anxiety and OCD, bipolar disorder, substance abuse, autism spectrum disorders, and trauma and PTSD—and a variety of effective complementary treatment tools for each, including dietary changes, nutritional supplements, specific cognitive or behavioral therapies, parenting interventions, medications, and more. Step-by-step treatment plans are included to guide clinicians on how best to approach each presenting problem. Mental Health for the Whole Child combines modern science, cutting-edge psychology, integrative medicine, and clinical wisdom to offer all professionals who work with kids a new, more hopeful way forward.
