Book HOLINESS THE FALSE AND THE TRUE H A IRONSIDE

Download or read book HOLINESS THE FALSE AND THE TRUE H A IRONSIDE written by H. A. Ironside and published by Believer's Bookshelf Canada Inc.. This book was released on 2014-12-04 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, by beloved author and preacher, H. A. Ironside, should be required reading for every Christian. It details in very clear terms the author’s own struggle for holiness. It is a deeply personal account of his conversion and sub- sequent involvement with the “holiness movement.” The influence of this false teaching which placed him under the law and his struggle to be “holy” ultimately led him to a breakdown. It was through God’s Word that he began to rejoice in the wonderful truth that not only is salvation by grace, but personal sanctification and victory are by grace as well. “Sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not un der law, but under grace” (Romans 6:14). We are thankful that this book is again available for the help of any of God’s children who are struggling with these issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is my desire, in dependence on the Lord, to write a faithful record, so far as memory now serves me, of some of God's dealings with my soul and my strivings after the experience of holiness, during the first six years of my Christian life, ere I knew the blessedness of finding all in Christ. This will make it necessary at times, I have little doubt, to "speak as a fool"--even as the apostle Paul did: but as I reflect on the need for such a record, I think I can say with him, "Ye have compelled me." If I may be privileged to thereby save others from the unhappy experiences I passed through in those early years, I shall feel abundantly repaid for the effort it will take to thus put these heart-experiences before my readers.

Book excerpt: For the first six years of Harry Ironside's Christian life, he was involved with a group that taught that sinless perfection could be obtained by the believer with an experience called the "second blessing." Ironside believed that if he strove hard enough, zealously resisted temptations, and used a variety of methods taught him by the group, he could reach this state of perfection. During this time period, Ironside became aware that many who were on the same path to perfect holiness fell into despair and even mental breakdown, and he himself finally became tormented that he had perhaps lost his salvation and was doomed to be eternally lost because he failed to reach this level of perfect holiness. Finally, young Ironside came to the realization that he had become wholly dependent upon himself rather than on Christ. He saw that he "had been looking within for holiness instead of without." In this book, Ironside gives us a two-fold treasure: First, he describes in detail the six years of bondage that led to disillusionment and then the glorious freedom and life of grace that followed. Second, Holiness: The False & the True provides valuable insight based on Scripture on holiness, sanctification, and how to live a life that is pleasing to the Lord.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FOR over twelve years I have considered the advisability of penning these papers. There seemed some good reasons why it might not be wise; there seem to me now to be more why I should undertake it. The two chief reasons that have come before me to hinder my writing them heretofore are these: (a) The detailing of a large measure of personal experience is necessarily involved. This is distasteful to many, and to none more than to myself. But I have been much impressed lately with the many instances in which the chief of the apostles uses his own experience as a warning and lesson to others who would put confidence in the flesh. For this cause alone I am at last persuaded to narrate my own endeavors to attain perfection by following the so-called "holiness teaching." There can surely be no charge brought against me of glorying in self in so doing. The record is too humiliating for that. Nor do I desire to take a morbid satisfaction in detailing my failures. But for this recital of my past errors and present blessedness I have not only apostolic example, but the entire book of Ecclesiastes is a similar record; written only that others might be spared the anguish and disappointment of treading the same weary path. (b) It is difficult to write an account like this without apparent criticism of the organization to which I once belonged, both as to its methods and its doctrines. This I shrink from. I have the fullest sympathy with the great work being done among the "submerged" in the larger cities of the world by these self-denying workers, and I would not say or write a word to hinder any who thus seek to save the outcast and wayward. I only regret that the converts are not given a clearer gospel, and more scriptural instruction afterwards. Many of my old "comrades" are still toiling as I once toiled in what they believe is a God-raised-up and God-directed "Army"; whose teaching they consider to be fully in accord with Scripture; and I know this record must give some of them pain. I would spare them this if I could. But when I reflect that thousands are yearly being disheartened and discouraged by their teaching; that hundreds yearly are ensnared into infidelity through the collapse of the vain effort to attain the unattainable; that scores have actually lost their minds and are now inmates of asylums because of the mental grief and anguish resultant upon their bitter disappointment in the search for holiness; I feel I should not allow sentimental reasons to hinder my relating the unvarnished truth, in the hope that under the blessing of God it may lead many to find in Christ Himself that sanctification which they can never find elsewhere, and in His Cross that exhibition of perfect love which they will look for in vain in their own hearts and lives. Therefore I send forth these papers, praying that both the experimental and doctrinal parts may be helpful to many and hindrances to none; and in commending all to the reader's spiritual intelligence, I would earnestly beseech him to "prove all things, and hold fast that which is good."

Book excerpt: Do you ever wonder whether God even cares if we're happy? This world can be so hard, and we aren't promised an easy road. But that's not the whole story. The Bible is filled with verses that prove that ours is a God who not only loves celebrations but also desperately wants his children to experience happiness. Why else would he go to the lengths he did to ensure our eternal happiness in his presence? We know that we will experience unimaginable joy and happiness in heaven, but that doesn't mean we can't also experience joy and happiness here on earth. In Happiness, noted theologian Randy Alcorn (bestselling author of Heaven) dispels centuries of misconceptions about happiness, including downright harmful ideas like the prosperity gospel, and provides indisputable proof that God not only wants us to be happy, he commands it. Randy covers questions like: How can I cultivate happiness in my life? What's the difference between joy and happiness? Can good things become idols that steal our happiness? Is seeking happiness selfish? How can I achieve happiness through gratitude? What does it look like to receive God's grace? The most definitive study on the subject of happiness to date, this book is a paradigm-shifting wake-up call for the church and Christians everywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IT is in Jude's brief letter-a fitting preface as it were to the book of Revelation-that we find the expression, "Praying in the Holy Spirit" (ver. 20). We have a pentagonal Christian portrayed in vers. 20 to 23. There are five sides to his character. He must be studious-devoutly meditating on the word of God, if he would be building himself up on his most holy faith-that "faith once delivered to the saints," found alone in the Book which the Spirit has inspired. But he must also be prayerful-"praying in the Holy Spirit." He must take time to speak to the One who speaks to him in the written Word. He is to be trustful-abiding in the sunshine of the divine favor: "Keep yourselves in the love of God." He is also hopeful. "Looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life," which is to be realized in all its fulness at His coming again.
