Book excerpt: The Holifield Heavy Ion Research Facility, with the completion of Phase I in late 1979, will include the Oak Ridge Isochronous Cyclotron (ORIC) and associated research areas, the new 25 MV tandem accelerator with new research areas for tandem beams, and modifications to utilize the ORIC as a booster accelerator. The combination of the tandem and ORIC will provide beam energies of 25 MeV/A for light heavy ions and 6 MeV/A up to A = 160. This paper discusses plans for a Phase II expansion of the facility to include an isochronous cyclotron with superconducting magnet and reconfiguration of the existing research areas and the ORIC vault to handle the higher energy beams from the new cyclotron. The new booster cyclotron is a low-flutter high-spiral design patterned after the MSU K = 800 design, with a central magnetic field of about 5 tesla and an extraction radius of 1 meter. The new beam transport system will incorporate an rf beam-splitter system that will be able to deliver successive beam pulses to two or three experiment areas.

Book excerpt: At Oak Ridge we are now in the final stages of completion of our heavy ion project. The facility, has as its centerpiece the 25MV Pelletron built by National Electrostatics Corporation. At the time of this writing (March 1982), the only tasks remaining for completion are the acceptance tests with beam to be performed at the design rating of 25MV on terminal. Along with the 20MV machine at Tokai and the 20MV machine at Buenos Aires, this trio of accelerators represents the new generation of Super-tandems presently in various stages of completion by NEC. In this paper, I shall review briefly some of the history of the work on the 25MV accelerator at Oak Ridge. In doing so, I will try to bring out those points that I feel are most illustrative of what may be expected as installation proceeds on the machine here in Argentina. Finally, as time permits, I'll discuss some of the other features of the Holifield Facility.

Book excerpt: A separated-sector cyclotron booster accelerator is being designed for the Holifield Heavy Ion Research Facility as a Phase II project to be started in 1978. Phase I of the HHIRF, now under construction, includes a 25 MV tandem electrostatic accelerator, a beam transport and injection system to enable use of the Oak Ridge Isochronous Cyclotron as an energy booster for tandem beams, and some additional experiment areas and associated beam transport systems. The Phase I facility using the ORIC-25 MV tandem combination will provide energies up to about 25 MeV/amu for light ions such as oxygen and more than 5 MeV/amu up to the region of mass 160. The new Phase II separated-sector cyclotron will provide energies up to 100 MeV/amu for light ions and up to 12 MeV/amu for the heaviest ions such as uranium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beam buncher has been developed to produce very short pulses of beam from the 25 MV accelerator for injection into ORIC. The buncher is a two-harmonic double-drift klystron-type operating over a frequency range of 4.5 to 14.5 MHz and has produced 1.1-ns pulse widths of 16O in tests on the ORNL EN tandem accelerator. Both rf voltage on, and relative phase between, the two buncher drift tubes must be accurately controlled to maintain the required narrow pulse width. A control system has been developed which accomplishes these tasks as well as automatic tuning of the buncher resonators, monitoring system parameters, and remote adjustment of various mechanical devices. Input commands and monitoring signals are CAMAC-compatible so that the system can eventually be included in the computer-based control system for the accelerator. In addition to the requirement for a very narrow beam pulse, the pulses must arrive at the ORIC dee gap with precise phasing. A closed-loop control for this task is being constructed using the beam pulse phase detector circuit developed at Argonne National Laboratory.
