Book Holding the Line in I Corps

Download or read book Holding the Line in I Corps written by Nathaniel R. Helms and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2023-03-09 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is late January 1968 when the first three incoming rounds hit Con Thien. It is undeniably the most terrifying event the rookie US Army soldiers have ever endured. Their doggie platoon sergeant, Walter Walling, who does not tolerate disrespect up or down, does his best to calm his troops. But with a North Vietnamese Army who likes laying in a few rounds and forcing the enemy to run, his job serving on the DMZ is a challenging one. As Sergeant Walling and his men, all from varying backgrounds and parts of the United States, do their best to learn an unfamiliar terrain and prepare for battle, the young American fighting men must bravely face the possibility of death while serving their country. But as a fight for power soon reveals the horrors of war in all its glory, one thing becomes certain: none of the men will return home the same as they were before. In this military story based on true events, a group of American soldiers find themselves at the end of a divided line between North and South Vietnam during 1968 and 1969.

Book excerpt: The Battle of the Aisne fought in September 1914 introduced a new and savage mode of warfare to the soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force, their French allies and to the German Army. Both officers and men were trained to fight mobile wars. When they reached the north bank of the Aisne, the 'Old Contemptibles' would be stopped by the Germans entrenched on high ground, armed with machine guns and supported by heavy artillery. The British commanders would naively send their troops on futile assaults up slopes devoid of cover to attack the German lines dug in on the ridges along the Chemin des Dames and concealed by woodland. The British did not even have grenades. The BEF suffered 12,000 casualties. Their commanders, who were not trained to fight a modern war, were lost for a solution or even a strategy. It was on the Chemin des Dames that the first trenches of the Western Front were dug and where the line that would stretch from the Swiss frontier to the North Sea began. The Battle of the Aisne saw the dawn of trench warfare and a stalemate that would last for the next four years. Wide-ranging archival research by author Paul Kendall makes this the first in-depth study of the battle in print. His correspondence with surviving relatives of those who fought brings a human face to the terrible casualty statistics that would come to define the trenches.

Book The British Army 1914 1918

Download or read book The British Army 1914 1918 written by Andrew Rawson and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2014-07-07 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An indispensable guide to the British Army during the First World War covers the men who fought for Britain: from the 'Old Contemptibles' – the professionals who stemmed the German advance at the beginning of the war – to the Territorials, the 'Derby Men', Kitchener's 'New Army' and the conscripts who eventually defeated the Kaiser's armies four years later. Andrew Rawson examines the impressive contributions made by the Dominions and the Empire and explores aspects of doctrine, training, communications, strategy and tactics, together with divisional organisations, histories and the roles of the different Arms and Services. He reviews all aspects of the soldier's everyday life – uniforms, equipment, rations, trench life, leave and military discipline – and profiles the commanders and the legacy of the war in art, as well as providing information on cemeteries and places of interest. It is all here, in one book.

Book Holding the Line

Download or read book Holding the Line written by Ronny Jackson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-07-26 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A behind-the-scenes political memoir written by a prominent White House physician. I would talk to the president before the chief of staff even saw the president in the morning. I walked into work, and I was already in the Oval Office talking to President Trump. It was rarely medical, to be honest with you; it was whatever was going on in the news. I’d be the first person he’d see in the morning. The president was completing tasks two to three hours before anybody else showed up in the West Wing to work. He’d get up at five o’clock in the morning and would be watching TV, tweeting, making phone calls, and doing all types of other tasks. President Trump would poke his head into my office or I’d walk out, and we would say, “Good morning. Did you see this or that?” He was always asking me about things on TV and what was going on, from Iran to Stormy Daniels. He’d say, “Walk with me.” So I’d walk him to the Oval Office, and we’d talk about everything. I’d walk out through the outer Oval Office and the chief of staff, national security advisor, and even the CIA briefer would be standing there, waiting to get in and talk to him. I’d walk out, they’d walk in, and his day would start. I was the first person he saw every morning and the last person he saw every evening when he went to bed.
