Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, people have asked me to write about my theology, and I have consistently said that I could tell them what I thought at that particular day but that it would be different tomorrow, which is to say that I strongly believe that theology is a growing thing, constantly changing within the context of a changing society. The book became much more autobiographical than I intended. I discovered that my theology changed because of any experiences I had. I have described my story chronologically, beginning with my early years and how the myth of Christianity was implanted in my mind. I go on to show how I got involved in the church during high school and college and discovered others had different myths than I did. This expanding awareness gave me the stimulus to take a hard look at my own myth. Several professors at both college and seminary helped me through the changes in my understanding of the Christian faith, and I describe via some of my writings what those were. In my first congregation, a new church development, and in subsequent ones, I realized that we understate our laity, and their desire to learn about new concepts has come with further study of scholars. I came to trust that desire and began to preach and teach not only the churchs dogmatics but also the results of creative imagination and the discovery of many scholars throughout the world and from many religious perspectives. My final chapter is entitled So What Do You Believe? In this, I make an attempt to pull together the various and growing concepts of my thought throughout my fifty-plus years in the ordained ministry of the Presbyterian Church. From experience, I know laypersons would be interested in this book. In addition, pastors and other religious professionals, I think, would find it helpful as they go through their own theological pilgrimage.

Book The Last of a Salty Breed

  • Author : Roy Vaughan
  • Publisher : Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency
  • Release : 2015
  • ISBN : 1681811685
  • Pages : 472 pages

Download or read book The Last of a Salty Breed written by Roy Vaughan and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2015 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just as the Romans built roads to create and maintain their empire, so the British ruled the ocean waves with ships, and created the biggest empire the world has seen. The Last of a Salty Breed tells tales about British ships, seamen, and the many millions of folk who were voluntarily or forcibly shipped to the four corners of the world to create new countries. This book takes a conventional, chronological narrative interspersed by interludes between the chapters. They are light-hearted or poignant in nature, in many cases highlighting the high and low points of seafaring, and the harrowing voyages of times past. The author, a former maritime journalist for the New Zealand Herald and a ship deck officer, adds to the narrative his personal experiences and those of his maritime ancestors, who stretch back to the 1700s. The main “characters” are ships and prominent seafarers who made history one way or another, from Elizabethan mariners to present time, and include the author’s long family history of seafaring. “The dual dialogue and the subject a very worthy one, as to my knowledge there is no history of the New Zealand Merchant Navy, only books about ships and individual shipping companies.” – Captain Hamish Ross, editor of “Sea Breezes,” the worldwide magazine of ships and the sea

Book Ghost Galleon

  • Publisher : Texas A&M University Press
  • Release : 2019-10-03
  • ISBN : 162349768X

Download or read book Ghost Galleon written by Edward Von der Porten and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-03 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ghost Galleon tells the story of archaeologists’ twenty-year search on a desolate beach in Baja California for the enigmatic remains of a Spanish galleon that disappeared without a trace more than four centuries ago. Carrying a cargo of Asian riches to the New World, Manila galleons forged the final link in the unification of the world through commerce by their annual voyages across the Pacific Ocean. Here, author Edward Von der Porten relates how a chance viewing of Chinese porcelain sherds in a museum catalog led him, his wife Saryl, and a team of researchers to the beachcombers who discovered the sherds. To Von der Porten, these sherds represented the possibility of something much more significant: one of the earliest known Manila galleon shipwrecks on the West Coast. In collaboration with the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico (INAH), Von der Porten and his colleagues undertook the first of many archaeological expeditions to investigate the site in 1999. Over twenty years, a team of American and Mexican archaeologists recovered thousands of artifacts and concluded that they had located the remains of the cargo from a Spanish galleon—most likely the San Juanillo of 1578. This copiously illustrated, highly accessible work offers an inside view of how archaeologists carefully assemble the evidence that allows scientific reconstruction of past events. Despite the grudging resistance of time, Von der Porten and his colleagues have resurrected the tale of the ill-fated San Juanillo to enrich our understanding and appreciation of the past.

Book Quantitative Reasoning in the Context of Energy and Environment

Download or read book Quantitative Reasoning in the Context of Energy and Environment written by Robert Mayes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-19 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides professional development leaders and teachers with a framework for integrating authentic real-world performance tasks into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) classrooms. We incorporate elements of problem-based learning to engage students around grand challenges in energy and environment, place-based leaning to motivate students by relating the problem to their community, and Understanding by Design to ensure that understanding key concepts in STEM is the outcome. Our framework has as a basic tenet interdisciplinary STEM approaches to studying real-world problems. We invited professional learning communities of science and mathematics teachers to bring multiple lenses to the study of these problems, including the sciences of biology, chemistry, earth systems and physics, technology through data collection tools and computational science modeling approaches, engineering design around how to collect data, and mathematics through quantitative reasoning. Our goal was to have teachers create opportunities for their students to engage in real-world problems impacting their place; problems that could be related to STEM grand challenges demonstrating the importance and utility of STEM. We want to broaden the participation of students in STEM, which both increases the future STEM workforce, providing our next generation of scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians, as well as producing a STEM literate citizenry that can make informed decisions about grand challenges that will be facing their generation. While we provide a specifi c example of an interdisciplinary STEM module, we hope to do more than provide a single fish. Rather we hope to teach you how to fish so you can create modules that will excite your students.
