But the local damsels he hopes to save assure him that the last thing they need is rescuing. The runaway bull he tries to catch wears him like a hat. And don't even ask about the ogre. Book excerpt: Founded just a few years after Sydney, Hobart is renowned for its historic Georgian buildings and beautiful scenery. The harsh conditions for convicts contrasted grimly with the lifestyle of the free settlers. Find out how both groups actually lived, with extracts from one of Australia's oldest newspapers, as well as photographs and stories about Hobart's places and people. The Black War and the Black Line resulted in the deaths of many of Tasmania's Aboriginal people. Truganini was the most famous survivor and her contribution is explained. Modern Hobart is a tourist destination, attracting visitors who are keen to experience its historic sites, galleries, mountain forests and waterways. Hobart is also a place of departure for Antarctic research vessels, and its business community provides one of the few places in the world dedicated to their practical support.

Book Knocked Down

Download or read book Knocked Down written by Aileen Weintraub and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2022-03 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A laugh-out-loud memoir about a free-spirited, commitment-phobic Brooklyn girl who, after a whirlwind romance, finds herself living in a rickety farmhouse, pregnant, and faced with five months of doctor-prescribed bed rest because of unusually large fibroids. Aileen Weintraub has been running away from commitment her entire life, hopping from one job and one relationship to the next. When her father suddenly dies, she flees her Jewish Brooklyn community for the wilds of the country, where she unexpectedly falls in love with a man who knows a lot about produce, tractors, and how to take a person down in one jiu-jitsu move. Within months of saying “I do” she’s pregnant, life is on track, and then wham! Her doctor slaps a high-risk label on her uterus and sends her to bed for five months. As her husband’s bucolic (and possibly haunted) farmhouse begins to collapse and her marriage starts to do the same, Weintraub finally confronts her grief for her father while fighting for the survival of her unborn baby. In her precarious situation, will she stay or will she once again run away from it all? Knocked Down is an emotionally charged, laugh-out-loud roller-coaster ride of survival and growth. It is a story about marriage, motherhood, and the risks we take.

Book Hobart s 79th Armoured Division at War

Download or read book Hobart s 79th Armoured Division at War written by Richard Doherty and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2012-02-29 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This WWII history chronicles the remarkable career of a brilliant British Army commander and the innovative armored vehicles he created. Joining the Royal Tank Corps in 1923, Major-General Percy Hobart quickly established himself as one of the foremost thinkers on armored warfare. By 1938 he was GOC Mobile Division, later 7th Armored Division, in Egypt. He was also known for not suffering fools—a tendency that got him briefly relieved of his command. But during World War II, Winston Churchill called Hobart back to Army service with orders to train the now-legendary 11th Armored Division. He was then tasked with designing specialist armored fighting vehicles capable of breeching the Atlantic Wall. Known as Hobart's Funnies, these unique vehicles included mine-clearing tanks, bridge-carrying tanks, flamethrowers, swimming tanks and amphibious assault vehicles. Operated by Hobart’s 79th Armored Division, they played a major part in the D-Day landings and the subsequent European campaigns. Hobart's skills played a significant part in the final Allied victory, and the specialized funnies he introduced to modern warfare have since been adopted by all armies all over the world. Drawing on official records and personal recollections, historian Richard Doherty tells the incredible story of Percy Hobart and his 79th Armored Division.
