Book excerpt: Rejecting the historiographical tendency to downplay the intellectual, theoretical element in Nazism, contends that Hitler developed a coherent worldview, which proposed a kind of secular theodicy. Hitler's philosophy, which represented an Enlightenment style of thought, can be compared to the philosophies of Marx and Freud; like them, Hitler replaced God with an idealized version of man - only his criterion of humanity was different from theirs: it was creativity. Thus, the Jew, who was considered as culturally sterile as well as an exploiter and seducer, came to serve as an "un-man" and the devil. The Jew's very existence was unnatural in Hitler's view. The demonization of Jews was arbitrary in Nazi ideology; what was essential was their diaspora existence, comparable with the similar existence of Germans, which provided an opportunity to project German self-hatred on them. Dwells on the place of the Jews in Hitler's geopolitics. States that the tendency to downplay Nazism intellectually, or to stress its paradoxality and pathology, detaches it from the stock of Western culture from which it in fact stemmed.

One hundred thirteen of those taken into custody, several of them priests and nuns, perished at Auschwitz and other concentration camps. They were murdered in retaliation for the anti-Nazi pastoral letter written by the Dutch Catholic bishops. While Saint Teresa Benedicta is the most famous member of this group, having been canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1998, all of them deserve the title of martyr, for they were killed not only because they were Jews but also because of the faith of the Church, which had compelled the Dutch bishops to protest the Nazi regime. Through extensive research in both original and secondary sources, P.W.F.M. Hamans has compiled these martyrs' biographies, several of them detailed and accompanied by photographs. Included in this volume are some remarkable conversion stories, including that of Edith Stein, the German philosopher who had entered the Church in 1922 and later became a Carmelite nun, taking the name Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Several of the witnesses chronicled here had already suffered for their faith in Christ before falling victim to Hitler's "Final Solution," enduring both rejection by their own people, including family members, and persecution by the so-called Christian society in which they lived. Book excerpt: Regarded as the second most important book to come out of Nazi Germany, Alfred Rosenberg's Der Mythus des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts is a philosophical and political map which outlines the ideological background to the Nazi Party and maps out how that party viewed society, other races, social ordering, religion, art, aesthetics and the structure of the state. The "Mythus" to which Rosenberg (who was also editor of the Nazi Party newspaper) refers was the concept of blood, which, according to the preface, "unchains the racial world-revolution." Rosenberg's no-hold barred depiction of the history of Christianity earned it the accusation that it was anti-Christian, and that unjustified controversy overshadowed the most interesting sections of the book which deal with the world racial situation and the demand for racially homogenous states as the only method to preserve individual world cultures. Rosenberg was hanged at Nuremberg on charges of "waging wars of aggression" even though he had never served in the military, and it is likely that he was hanged purely because of this book.
