Book Hitch Hiking to India in 1962

Download or read book Hitch Hiking to India in 1962 written by John Waller and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2016-04-11 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1962, two Cambridge students hitchhike to India, before hippies hit the trail. Andrew writes a diary, the comedy. John reads the map, thumbs throughout the night and now writes about the history, which make for tragedy. They travel through Yugoslavia where Catholic Croats had massacred Orthodox Serbians and Serbs would later murder 8,000 Muslims, Greece where 1.3 million Christians had been 'exchanged' for 480,000 Muslims, and Turkey where 600,000 Christian Armenians had died when deported to the Syrian desert where ISIS is now based. In Iran John faces a life-threatening mob following the CIA coup. In India, they meet anger over the partition just 14 years before, when 12 million became refugees and well over a half a million were killed because of their religion. They learn about the Sikhs and the attack on the Golden Temple by Indira Gandhi. However, the two friends received fantastic hospitality throughout. John compares these countries 50 years on, seeing the economic collapse in Greece and the refugees crisis in the Balkans.Vince Cable says: 'This is a really interesting piece of work, which blends personal anecdote and adventure with the history and politics of the places visited on an epic journey. We are reminded that today's tourist traps in the Balkans and Turkey, not to mention the Punjab, have a terrible history. But the kindness of the people that hitch hikers have to trust shines through as does the strength of the friendship of John and Andrew who made this journey of a lifetime.'

Book Backpacker Tourism and Economic Development

Download or read book Backpacker Tourism and Economic Development written by Mark P. Hampton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a phenomenal growth of backpacker tourism from the overland routes to India in the 1960s, to present-day backpacker tourism across the less developed world. As a result there has been significant economic development impacts of backpacker tourism upon local communities especially in areas with the largest concentrations of backpackers (South and South-East Asia particularly Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and India), as well as increasingly in Latin America. This volume provides a focused review of the economic development impacts of backpacker tourism in developing regions furthering knowledge on how backpacker tourism can play a crucial role in development strategies in these areas. First, it reviews the origins of the backpackers with a detailed examination of their "hippy" predecessors on the overland trail, before discussing the emergence of modern backpackers including social and cultural aspects, and how new technologies are changing their experience. It then analyses the powerful economic development impacts of backpackers on local host communities in cities and rural areas with a special focus on coastal destinations. Extensive case study material is used from backpacker destinations across Asia, Latin America and Africa. In doing so the book provides original insights into how backpacker tourism is highly significant for poverty alleviation and effective local development since it has strong linkages to the local economy, and less economic leakage than conventional tourism. Written by a leading academic in this area, this volume will be of interest to students of Tourism and Development Studies.

Book excerpt: India today is a vibrant free-market democracy, a nation well on its way to overcoming decades of widespread poverty. The nation’s rise is one of the great international stories of the late twentieth century, and in India Unbound the acclaimed columnist Gurcharan Das offers a sweeping economic history of India from independence to the new millennium. Das shows how India’s policies after 1947 condemned the nation to a hobbled economy until 1991, when the government instituted sweeping reforms that paved the way for extraordinary growth. Das traces these developments and tells the stories of the major players from Nehru through today. As the former CEO of Proctor & Gamble India, Das offers a unique insider’s perspective and he deftly interweaves memoir with history, creating a book that is at once vigorously analytical and vividly written. Impassioned, erudite, and eminently readable, India Unbound is a must for anyone interested in the global economy and its future.

Book Cold Sun

  • Publisher : Texas A&M University Press
  • Release : 2023-02-27

Download or read book Cold Sun written by William H. Jordan and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2023-02-27 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 1944, a US Army Air Corps transport, en route to its home base in India, crashed into a snowfield in Tibet, killing all crew members. Because of the remote location and fierce winter weather, the aircraft was covered by heavy snowfall. The snowfield glaciated, completely hiding the aircraft until its accidental discovery by a Tibetan hunter in 1993. A nearby Chinese army garrison launched an immediate reconnaissance into the crash site and brought out remnants of the airplane and remains of the crew. They then notified the American Embassy in Beijing. Then-Colonel William H. Jordan, commander of the US Army Central Identification Laboratory in Hawaii, was assigned to investigate the crash site and to recover, identify, and repatriate the remains of the fallen US servicemen. Cold Sun: The Search for World War II Airmen Lost in a Tibetan Glacier is Jordan’s recounting of the events surrounding the recovery, including the final, solemn duty of officially informing the lost crewmen’s family members—by this time in middle age or older—of the fate of their loved ones. He weaves the mission of the aircraft and crew’s fate through the prism of America’s history of identifying and recovering their fallen warriors, the efforts over the years, and technological leaps needed to finally accomplish this grim, necessary mission. Inspiring and informative, based in the personal reflections of Jordan and the others involved, Cold Sun tells the gripping story of a tragic loss, a harrowing recovery effort, and the human efforts involved.
