Book excerpt: Hit the Headlines charts out a series of fun and inspiring, cross-curricular journalism workshops that enhance key skills and confidence in areas such as: Writing and editing. Critical assessment. Interviewing and observation. Mental flexibility and resourcefulness. Role-playing and teamwork. This book will enable teachers of 9 – 15 year-olds to involve their students in a number of effective and well-tested exercises, games and scenarios, which will encourage them into enthusiastically seeking out and gaining further knowledge in areas such as news, journalism, social issues, IT, data assessment, ‘intelligent observation’, and enhanced questioning and listening. This is ‘organic learning’ at its best! An introduction to the theory behind the book summarises short and long term learning outcomes which your students can achieve through these methods, explaining why scenarios which feel ‘real’ can immerse students and inspire them to achieve greater proficiency. The author also flags up particular aspects of the book which encourage readers to read and use it systematically, as well as to take on specific challenges themselves in order to better assist their students in the writing and editing challenges it contains. Practical photocopiable templates for many chapters are provided, which can be used as classroom (and out-of classroom) exercises, examples and solutions to exercises. Through these engrossing journalistic scenarios, students will learn how to critically assess levels of ‘interest and importance’ of diverse facts, and so begin to understand that report or presentation writing of any sort involves sequencing a critical balance between these two factors. Readers and users of this book can go on to customise their own scenarios, drawing on the stimulating techniques outlined to improve their students’ factual writing and related thinking skills. In particular, classroom teachers in primary, middle and secondary schools and all literacy co-ordinators will find this book extremely useful, as well as students studying for PGCEs and NQTs.

Book Intifada Hits the Headlines

Download or read book Intifada Hits the Headlines written by Daniel Dor and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2004-02-18 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this nuanced and detailed study of newspaper reporting during the escalation of the second Intifada in the fall of 2000, Daniel Dor shows how real events are subject to distortion and manipulation by the media. In an analysis of the heart of Israel's media establishment -- the newspapers Yediot Ahronot, Ma'ariv, and Ha'aretz -- he finds a wide gap between the reality reported by field reporters and the eventual newspaper accounts framed by editors. Led by beliefs, opinions, and emotional responses rather than the facts provided by their reporters, these editors created a platform on which a new and fearful narrative for Israeli--Palestinian relations was built. Yet while Dor demonstrates that the media construct the news rather than simply report it, his sophisticated analysis also shows that no one entity or person is responsible. Rather than a supreme authority, Dor argues, it is the influence of fear, anger, ignorance, and a desire to please and sell newspapers that threatens the freedom of the press in a liberal democracy.

Book excerpt: This book explicitly chronicles 40 cases of unsolved murders and disappearances over a period of more than 160 years, tracing the evolution of criminal investigation and forensic techniques. Murders and other violent crimes often leave an indelible mark on society. The 18th-century murder of "Beautiful Cigar Girl" Mary Rogers helped the then newly emerging tabloid papers become a fixture in the United States. The Federal Aviation Administration was spurred into requiring electronic screening of passengers and carry-on luggage by a series of highly-publicized hijackings. Abductions of youth gave birth to Amber Alerts and advertising missing children on milk cartons. And popular TV shows like Law and Order, CSI, and Cold Case document our fascination with police investigations, heinous criminals, and the complicated aftermath of their actions. This book examines 40 well-known cases of unsolved murders and suspected abductions over a period of over 160 years. Cases are organized chronologically to give readers insight into the evolution of criminal investigation techniques and forensics in the last century and a half. Later chapters detail how modern forensics were used in attempts to solve old cold cases or helped generate new leads.

Book Headlines Headaches and the Human Condition

Download or read book Headlines Headaches and the Human Condition written by Steve Whiddett and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s not just the people in the news that do bad and stupid things. Media headlines would have us believe that bad people do bad things and stupid people do stupid things. But we have all suffered headaches that we did not intend to create and we have all suffered from headaches that others created for us. What if bad and stupid things happen just because normal people do what normal people do? Could there be influences in situations that contribute to people doing bad or stupid things? Headlines and headaches often happen without malice and regardless of knowledge or skills. They happen when normal people use normal human processes to deal with their situations. The processes we use have helped us evolve and survive for thousands of years but the less we understand them, the more they seem to let us down in modern day situations. If we understand how bad and stupid things happen, could we avoid doing bad and stupid things? Could we even prevent bad and stupid situations and make them less painful and more valuable? Using everyday language and real world examples, Steve Whiddett takes us behind some very public headlines and some very real everyday headaches. Headlines, Headaches and the Human Conditionprovides insights into situations and the human condition, which will help you change your own situations. It is a book that we can all use to make situations more manageable and more productive for ourselves, for organisations and for society.

Book Behind the Headlines

Download or read book Behind the Headlines written by Karyn Turk and published by Post Hill Press. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the days of clickbait news, it’s hard to see the truth behind today’s biggest stories. Karyn Turk, Mrs. Florida 2016, was no stranger to headlines. She worked behind the scenes as an executive for CBS, then won the 2016 Mrs. Florida Pageant just as Donald J. Trump was running for president. She supported his campaign, all while wearing a sash and crown. She became a well-recognized crisis media manager for high-profile political cases that made headlines, and had no fear of controversy. Karyn’s desire to stand up for those she felt were being mistreated was no secret. She was an outspoken, loud, and proud conservative with a social media following and a big mouth. She was reaching a high point in her career. Then cancel culture came for her. The deep-state Florida swamp rose up, and the connected legal gators began to circle her. The headlines were as salacious as they could be: “Mrs. Florida stole pennies off her Mother’s eyes before she died,” “Fresh off a fundraiser for Roger Stone, Mrs. Florida pleads guilty to social security fraud.” The true story was of a daughter who tried to stand up against corruption and abuse—but it was a story that none of the newspapers or media outlets reported. Instead, a misdemeanor for a seventeen-thousand-dollar misappropriation of her mother’s social security pension was the charge, and a month-long jail sentence in a maximum-security prison the resulting consequence—a bizarre result for someone with no criminal record at all. Behind the Headlines reveals how Karyn’s career, family life, and credibility was called into question because of the impact cancel culture has on society.

Download or read book Antifa written by Mark Bray and published by Melville House. This book was released on 2017-08-14 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Bestseller “Focused and persuasive... Bray’s book is many things: the first English-language transnational history of antifa, a how-to for would-be activists, and a record of advice from anti-Fascist organizers past and present.”—THE NEW YORKER As long as there has been fascism, there has been anti-fascism — also known as “antifa.” Born out of resistance to Mussolini and Hitler, the antifa movement has suddenly burst into the headlines amidst opposition to the Trump administration and the alt-right. In a smart and gripping investigation, historian and activist Mark Bray provides a detailed survey of the full history of anti-fascism from its origins to the present day — the first transnational history of postwar anti-fascism in English. Today, critics say shutting down political adversaries is anti-democratic; antifa adherents argue that the horrors of fascism must never be allowed the slightest chance to triumph again. Bray amply demonstrates that antifa simply aims to deny fascists the opportunity to promote their oppressive politics, and to protect tolerant communities from acts of violence promulgated by fascists. Based on interviews with anti-fascists from around the world, Antifa details the tactics of the movement and the philosophy behind it, offering insight into the growing but little-understood resistance fighting back against fascism in all its guises.
