Book History of Warren Massachusetts Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Warren Massachusetts Classic Reprint written by Olney I. Darling and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Warren, Massachusetts In presenting this work to the public, the author would indulge in a few introductory remarks: History, to be entertaining and useful, should be reliable; and while infallibility is not claimed for this production, it is hoped no deviations from the line of historical fact may be discovered. The material has been collected by personal observation, conversation with the oldest residents in town, correspondence with parties who formerly lived in Warren, and by careful examination of the town and church records. The writer would here express his gratitude to Mr. S. E. Blair for aid kindly and politely furnished. Also to John Moore, E. F. Strickland, Alvin Copeland, and to all others who have, in any manner, assisted him in his labors. If the perusal of this book shall be the means of moving the people of Warren to a greater interest in their local history and surroundings, the writer will feel amply rewarded. This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Passages From the Life of Henry Warren Howe, Consisting of Diary and Letters Written During the Civil War, 1816-1865 The history of our late Civil War has been ably written by historians, also the personal memoirs of some of cur great commanders, but there were thousands of loyal soldiers who went to the front in 1861 without bounties, actuated simply and solely by patriotic motives. Many of them never returned to their homes. There were others, equally patriotic, who joined the ranks, "fought the fight," and are still living, enjoying the fruits of their victories and the satisfaction of seeing the old flag still floating in the breeze, "not a star erased or a stripe polluted." Being one of this fortunate number, I have published a partial record of my service, war diary, letters and ancestry, dedicating the same to the younger relatives of the generation following the war, with the belief that the same patriotism courses in their veins as has shown itself since the years 1633-37, during which our ancestors landed in this country and began their battle for freedom. To be born of a goodly heritage is a rich legacy! What did these sturdy ancestors seek? "The wealth of seas, the spoils of war?" Far from it! "They sought a faith's pure shrine." "Aye. call It holy ground. The spot where first they trod. They have loft unstained what there they found. Freedom to worship God!" Through their loyalty and ours, "The star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave." Download or read book A History of the Massachusetts General Hospital Classic Reprint written by N. I. Bowditch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 778 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Massachusetts General Hospital Of the Medical College, the scene of a late fearful tragedy; and, in the background beyond the river, the hill is crowned by the Asylum, a peaceful retreat, standing forth from amid the foliage and shrubbery by which it is sheltered and secluded. I have been permitted by the Trustees to use a separate engrav ing Of the Asylum, which has for several years belonged to the Corporation. The likeness Of Dr. James jackson was also executed for this publication from a daguerreotype, of which it is a very accurate copy, though the happiest expression has not been secured. The engraving Of Dr. Warren is from an existing plate, which he kindly placed at my disposal. After the volume was in the press, I learned, for the first time, that my friend and co - trustee, george M. Dexter, Esq., had already prepared, at great labor and expense, large and elegant engrav ings of the interior and exterior Of the Hospital, which, at a future day, he intended to publish, with some description of the establishment, historical as well as architectural. Of all these engravings, he, with great liberality, offered me the free use. This courtesy, however, I felt that I ought not to accept. His intended publication he will, as is hoped, yet complete. Its design is truly magnificent, and will not be superseded by the present compilation. If, indeed, that shall be regarded as letter press worthy Of accompanying his architectural illustrations, I may well be satisfied. Book Colonial Massachusetts Classic Reprint

Download or read book Colonial Massachusetts Classic Reprint written by Mary Schuyler Phillips and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colonial Massachusetts For seven years, from the age of 14 to 21, I sailed in and out of Boston Harbor and gazed with awe and admiration upon Bunker Hill monument, as I saw it rise above the waters of Massachusetts Bay or sink beneath the horizon, as our little fishing vessel sailed to and fro on the very waters over which the Mayflower came. For eleven years, as Superintendent of Schools, I lived almost within the shadow of that monument. Faneuil Hall; the old State House; the old South Church; North Church; the Charlestown Shore; Concord and Lexington; the rude bridge that spanned the flood; Salem; Provincetown Harbor; Plymouth Rock; State Street; Dorchester Heights; Battery Wharf these all became a part of my life through personal associa tions, While I lived over in imagination the scenes and events that gave them their place in American History. Bradford, Alden, Standish; Hancock, Franklin, Adams; Otis, Paul Revere, General Warren - these seemed like living men. I knew them. That the pupils might gain something of the patriotic impulse that comes through personal association with historic scenes and events, I outlined a series of historic excursions, or field days, to be taken by all seventh and eighth grade pupils, as part of their grammar school course. This was for pupils living in the vicinity of Boston. Such a meansof teaching is not available for the children of Ohio. To help meet that need, however, to some extent, the present monograph - the third in the series of Colonial Studies has been provided by the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Ohio, and is offered to the school children with the h0pe that through its reading they may obtain a clearer idea about the colony of the Pilgrims and Puritans, and may come to have a deeper appreciation of the suffering they endured and the sacrifice they made; and most of all that through these clearer ideas and deeper appreciation the children of today may become more devoted to America and more willing to live for and, if need be, die for - the things for which America stands. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Warren G. Harding the Man When a friend appeared and offered to stand sponsor for a book, I could not resist. There was a fire in my bones that impelled me to write when Warren G. Harding was nominated for President of the United States. While not intended as a political book, there is an earnest intent that the reader may feel that this tribute is tempered with the restraint due to dealing with future events, and that it is not inspired by partisan bias. All America loves a man - no matter under what party banner he may enlist. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History: The Humane Society, Commonwealth of Massachusetts; A Selected List of Premiums, Awarded by the Trustees, From Its Commencement to the Present Time, List of the Members and Officers "The Humane Society of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts," was instituted in 1786. Its origin at that time, or the immediate occasion of its formation, was the result of an interview between the late Rev. Dr. James Freeman, Dr. Aaron Dexter, Royall Tyler, Esq., and Dr. Moyes, a gentleman from England, then residing in Boston, who, though blind from his childhood, had distinguished himself by his scientific attainments, and by his zeal for the interests of philanthropy. In conversing on the various charitable institutions established in Great Britain, Dr. Moyes, as we learn from a document already published, "suggested the outlines of a plan of a society, similar to that of the British Royal Humane Society, incorporated in 1774, in imitation of one in Holland, to restore to life persons apparently dead," &c.
