Book excerpt: Though it was far from the front lines of the War Between the States, Williamstown, Vermont, made undeniable contributions to the victory of the United States Army. The proud sons of Patriots fell on the fields of Gettysburg, Antietam and Shiloh, and many gallant soldiers were lost in lesser-known skirmishes. These men fought for honor, for country and at times for money. Many men made the ultimate sacrifice, and others who returned home bore the scars of battle for the rest of their lives. With the support of the Williamstown Historical Society, author Paul Zeller honors the Williamstown soldiers and ordinary citizens who fought to preserve the Union and presents their incredible stories of adventure and bravery.

Eighteen-hundred died in battle or from wounds received in battle and 3,400 died from non-combat related causes. New Hampshire raised 18 infantry regiments, 1 cavalry battalion, 1 cavalry regiment, 1 light artillery battery, 2 heavy artillery companies, 1 heavy artillery regiment, and 3 sharpshooter companies. Joab Nelson Patterson wrote the entry for New Hampshire. Patterson began the war as a private and eventually reached the rank of Brevet Brigadier General. Eight New Hampshire regiments can be found in Fox's list of "300 fighting Regiments." New Hampshire suffered a 16.7 percent casualty rate during the war. Nearly 2,000 were killed in combat or died of wounds, and another 3,000 died from disease. Rhode Island, written by Elisha Hunt Rhodes, raised for service to the union 8 regiments of infantry, 10 batteries of light artillery, 3 cavalry regiments, 1 cavalry squadron, and 3 regiments of heavy artillery, one of which was all African-American. Elisha Hunt Rhodes enlisted in the 2nd RI Infantry as a private and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and Brevet Colonel by war's end. The Second Vermont Volunteer Infantry Regiment saw its first combat at the Battle of Bull Run and fought on to Lee's surrender. This richly illustrated work draws from service, pension and court-martial records, and personal letters and diaries to portray the junior officers, noncommissioned officers, and privates of the regiment as they were in battle, on the march, and in camp. Some were heroes, like Private William W. Noyes, awarded the Medal of Honor, and others were not, like Private George E. Blowers, executed for desertion. Book A War of the People

Download or read book A War of the People written by Jeffrey D. Marshall and published by UPNE. This book was released on 1999 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War left no Vermonters untouched, and few families free from pain. More than 140 letters -- carefully selected from some 9000 in several archives -- convey in personal terms the combat experience of Vermonters throughout the war. Vermont raised seventeen infantry regiments, one cavalry regiment, three batteries of light artillery and three companies of sharpshooters -- nearly 35,000 soldiers in all. As a result of this impressive commitment, Vermont suffered one of the highest rates of military deaths of any Union state. A War of the People covers the war chronologically, with editor Jeffrey D. Marshall providing running commentary on both the war overall, and Vermonters' experiences. Supplemented with maps and photographs, it includes many voices -- from privates to colonels, mothers, wives, and best friends, young and old -- writing about battle narratives, camp life, financial advice, family matters, and much more. An African-American soldier from Hinesburgh, a French-Canadian soldier who enlisted in Milton, and dozens of others record their experiences in unforgettable words. Marshall's battlefront/homefront choice of letters provides a deeper understanding of the social and political dimensions that, although secondary to military concerns, were an integral part of Vermont's war years.

Book The Vermont Brigade in the Seven Days

Download or read book The Vermont Brigade in the Seven Days written by Paul G. Zeller and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vermont Brigade, sometimes referred to as the "First Vermont Brigade" or the "Old Brigade," fought its first full-brigade engagement in the Seven Days' battles. The leaders, as well as the rank and file, were inexperienced in warfare, but through sheer grit and determination they made a name for themselves as one of the hardest-fighting units in the Army of the Potomac. Using soldiers' letters, diaries, and service and pension records, this book gives a soldier's-eye-view of the Virginia summer heat, days of marching with very little rest or nourishment, and the fear and exhilaration of combat. Also included are the stories of 29 men that were wounded or killed and how the tragedies affected their families.
