This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Vermilion County, Illinois, Vol. 1 of 2 From the time that the first White settler cast his lot within the borders of What is now Vermilion County to the present, stretches a period of years marked by the most momentous events in the world's history. Since that time the territory now comprising Vermilion County has changed from an unbounded waste, rich in potential great ness, but all undeveloped, into an empire in extent and a kingdom in wealth, prosperity and the influence of its people. In the preparation of this history former publications of a kindred nature and newspaper files have been freely consulted in an effort to reconcile some of the discrepancies of earlier writers. In many instances the aid of men, long residents of the county and authorities on these particular subjects, have been invoked, and the writer takes a reason able pride in having grouped in sequence the story of Vermilion County, which includes the salient facts of old histories, a wealth of new material, and a history that follows the course of the county from that day in 1819, when the first log cabin was erected, down to the begin ning of 1930. Although the writer realizes that in a work of this scope sins of omission have been committed, yet he trusts that the accuracy of this history is commensurate with the effort that has been made to make it what it is. There has been no attempt at fine writing, but only an earnest effort to tell in plain simple language the story of Vermilion County, its institutions and its people. The histories of Vermilion County by Hiram W. Beck with and the later one by Miss Lottie Jones, the Centennial Book by Clint Clay Tilton, and the History of Hoopeston, by S. V. Cox, published by the chronicle-herald, have been sources of considerable material, as well as have been the files of the Commercial News, the Morning Press, and other old newspaper files. If this history proves of interest to the present genera tion, and a source of study and reference for future generations, the writer will feel repaid a hundred fold for the time and effort expended. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1911 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XLIV. HEROES AND DISTINGUISHED PEOPLE. J. G. CANNON--W. J. CALHOUN--J. W. WILKIN--MRS. MARY HARTWELL CATHERWOOD--HIRAM W. BECKWITH--GURDON HUBBARD--SAMUEL M'ROBERTS--REV. JAMES ASHMORE HARVEY SOWDOWSKY RT. REV. VICAR GENERAL O'REILLY-- COL. O. F. HARMON--J. C. DAVIS--MICHAEL KELLEY. Every community, however small, has its representative heroes. Sometimes they are heroes of war, and sometimes they are the no less heroes of peace. Vermilion County has these, and the list is much longer than limited space will permit of naming. This is the reason that in compiling this list, local celebrities have been passed and only those whose influence was away from, as well as at, home, have been mentioned. This list of distinguished people is, as a matter of course, headed by the name of Speaker Cannon. Danville and Vermilion County are both better known as being the home of Speaker Cannon, than in any other way. Mr. Calhoun is a conspicuous figure in the world of affairs, and his citizenship, although more remote, is none the less valid. Judge Wilkin was a citizen of whom any community would be proud even though he had not won the distinction he did. Vermilion County has not been without people distinguished in the world of letters, and the writings of Mary Hubbwell Catherwood has made her home place distinguished. Mr. Hiram Beckwith was a recognized historian of merit. The state of Illinois loves to do him honor. Gurdon Hubbard is a representative of the past whose efforts should not be forgotten. Samuel McRoberts is one of the forgotten statesmen of that period of national life which tried men's souls. He represents Illinois as United States Senator. Aside from the field of politics and letters, there have been other walks in life where...

This book was released on 2017-01-23 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Illinois and Her People, Vol. 2 of 6 The people of the new state gave considerable attention to military matters. This gave those who had had some experience in war a chance to take command of units of the militia and assume the high sounding titles that go along with military organization. Muster days were marked events in the calendar of the year. The new state had started well under Governor Bond. The first session of the Legislature had been diligent in enacting such laws as their needs seemed to require. Courts had been organized, county officers appointed, and the machinery of civil government was fairly well adjusted. The governor was able to report a healthy financial condition of the state's new treasury department. At the meeting of the second Legislature, which convened in December, 1820, and held over into the year 1821, there were quite a few laws passed and some subjects considered which were taken up at later sessions. Book History of Henry County Illinois Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Henry County Illinois Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Henry L. Kiner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 1120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Henry County, Illinois, Vol. 2 Judge Waite attended the public schools of Vermont and after preparing for college took a four years' classical course in the Wesleyan University at Middle town, Connecticut. In his college days he was especially nofed for his ability as a writer and speaker and was graduated with high honors. In the year 1856 he arrived in Geneseo, Illinois, and following his admission to the bar in 1858 he at once became a successful lawyer. Advancement at the bar is proverbially slow, yet no dreary halt awaited him. Almost immediately he was accorded a large clientage and the character of his legal business constantly became more important as he demonstrated his ability to successfully cope with the intricate problems of the law. He was almost without exception correct in his application of legal principles and his knowledge of the law was comprehensive and ex haustive so that he was always able to cite a precedent or legal principle that was applicable to his cause. He participated in the organization of the republi can party and ever afterward honorably supported its men and measures. He was known throughout the state as a safe, able and courageous political leader and took part in every campaign. He was regarded as the right man for an emer gency, seeming to know exactly when and how to express himself to produce the best possible results that could be secured under any given condition. His splendid physical manhood was such as would attract attention in any gathering and he possessed, moreover, an appeal in voice, word and action that made him a strong and forceful speaker before any audience. He never really sought oflice, but was the choice of the people for important judicial, legislative, and other posi tions, the duties of which he discharged with great satisfaction to the general pub lic. He was a member of the convention which formed the present constitution of Illinois and was chairman of the committee on retrenchments and reforms. His report to the convention contained, among other things, a recommendation for an article prohibiting special legislation. He proposed the only method to put an end to this abuse and his recommendation was adopted and incorporated into the constitution of the state and is still one of its wisest and best provisions. As one of the framers of the organic law 'of Illinois he looked beyond the exigencies of the moment to the possibilities of the future and with notable sagacity pre pared for conditions that might arise. He was a careful student of history, an intelligent observer of all passing events and was well settled in his opinions upon great public questions. He gave support to the cause of the Union during the dark days of the Civil war and in all matters of citizenship stood for state and national honor and for continuous progress where the best interests of the coun try might be conserved.
