British Virgin Islands, Caribbean history, Oceanic people. In 1493, Christopher Columbus landed on an island he named Santa Cruz. Driven away by the Carib Indians, he sailed northward to a nearby group of islands he called Las Once Mil Virgenes, in honor of Saint Ursula. The French took Santa Cruz from Spain in 1650, renaming it Saint Croix. The towns of Christiansted and Frederiksted on Saint Croix and Charlotte Amalie, the capital, on Saint Thomas were founded by the Danes and named after Danish royalty. The country lies seventy miles east of Puerto Rico, in the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean, and is composed of three large and fifty small islands totaling 136 square miles (352 square kilometers). Saint Croix, the southernmost and largest island, has land suitable for agriculture. Saint Thomas, forty miles to the north, has the highest point on the islands, with little tillable land. With a good port at Charlotte Amalie, it became a commercial center with reliance on the slave trade. The smallest of the main islands, Saint John, was donated by Laurence Rockefeller in 1956 as a national park. After dividing the islands into plantations, the Danes began growing sugarcane, first using convicted criminals and then, after 1673, African slaves for labour. Commerce developed from the triangular trade in slaves brought from Africa, rum and molasses sent to Europe, and European goods shipped back to the islands. St. Thomas became a major slave market for the Caribbean. Denmark purchased St. Croix in 1733, and it became a major centre of sugarcane production. U.S. statesman Alexander Hamilton was born on Nevis island in 1755 and taken to St. Croix in 1765, where he worked in a countinghouse. By the early 19th century the sugar industry had begun to decline, and two slave revolts had shaken the plantation economy. Slavery was abolished in 1848, and in the 1860s the United States began negotiations to purchase the islands from Denmark. The sale was made in 1917 for $25 million. The islands were administered by the U.S. Navy until 1931, when they were transferred to the Department of the Interior; civilian governors appointed by the president then administered the islands. Tourism began to develop following the end of World War II in 1945

Book excerpt: History of British Virgin Island, touristic environment; The Virgin Islands were settled by indigenous people in about 100 B.C.E., and were encountered by Columbus on 22 October 1493. Throughout the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries the BVI were under Spanish control, during which time the islands provided temporary anchorages for Spanish convoys hiding from English privateers. The Dutch on Tortola established the first permanent European settlement, in 1602, but by 1666 they had been replaced by English planters. Due to its arid climate and hilly terrain, the BVI were one of the more unprofitable of Great Britain's plantation islands during the colonial period. As a British colony, the BVI were administered as part of the Leeward Islands Federation from 1872 to 1956. From 1902, when the local BVI legislature was abolished, to 1950, when it was reconstituted, the BVI experienced little in the way of direct governance by Great Britain. A century ago, one week before entering World War I, the United States purchased from Denmark a small group of islands in the Caribbean to prevent their possible takeover by Germany. The new U.S. territory, which had been known before as the Danish West Indies, became the Virgin Islands of the United States, and is now generally referred to as the U.S. Virgin Islands, a well-known Caribbean tourist destination. This book is a history of race relations, mainly between whites and blacks, and mainly on the island of St. Thomas, the political and commercial center of the U.S. Virgin Islands. It begins with the Danish background, 1672 to 1917, during which the importation of enslaved Africans for labor laid the foundation of the present population, which is mainly black. However, the book's main focus is on the changes that have taken place since the advent of U.S. rule in 1917, particularly greater economic growth (largely through tourism) and greater racial and social separation. Marilyn F. Krigger, a retired history professor, is a black native and resident of the U.S. Virgin Islands who has lived through most of the American century. In anticipation of the 2017 centennial of American rule, she was inspired to add to her previous research and writing on American racial influences on the social, political, economic, and cultural life of the Virgin Islands and to compile this book, while also appealing for greater morality and respect in human relations everywhere.
