As they contain much matter of a personal nature, I was not permitted to examine them, but his son, the Rev. J. S. B. Hodges, D.D., of Baltimore, very kindly read to me everything relating to my subject, and I wrote out such extracts then and there. Dr. Cutler gave me the unrestricted use of his pri vate records; two or three small volumes, containing pro grammes of services, criticism, etc. These were also of great value. The Rev. Dr. Dix kindly lent me some extracts from the Vestry Minutes, made for the purpose of his own his tory of the Parish; these covered only a limited period up to 1797. I am also indebted to several veterans of the earlier choirs, notably Mr. A. G. Wood and Mr. J. Outcalt, for interesting details. The development of Church music in the older coun tries has been the work of centuries; we move fast here, and, aided by their experience, have advanced from the crudest beginnings to the highest achievements in about fifty years. My imperfect picture of such development will, it is hoped, prove interesting not only to those who have taken part in the services herein described, but also to Church musicians and Church members generally. This book is published now by former members of Trinity Church Choir who look back with pleasure to their participation in the music of the Church, and retain their kind regard for the old choirmaster. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketch of Trinity Church, Trenton: From 1858-1910 Commemoration of the Golden Jubilee of the Parish This historical sketch of Trinity Church owes the fact of its publication to the desire expressed by members of the Congregation to possess in some permanent form the records of the past which the Rector had prepared for delivery on two recent occasions, namely the Tenth Anniversary of his pastorate, February 6, 1910, when he dealt with the events belonging to his own time, and the Golden Jubilee of the Parish, observed October 30 of the same year, when he sketched the period of the previous forty years. A resolution of the Vestry, passed November 10, 1910, requesting the Rector to prepare such a record from material in his possession, and to cause the same to be printed, formally laid the obligation upon him, with the result which follows. For the earlier history the writer has had to depend almost exclusively upon gleanings from formal documents, viz.: the Minute Book of the Vestry and the Parish Register, though he is also indebted for certain facts to the recollections of old parishioners. For the period covered by his own pastorate, the facts at his disposal were obviously many and familiar. He was indeed embarrassed by the wealth of his material. The disproportion between the space given to the first forty years and the last ten is thus to be accounted for, as also the more intimate and personal treatment which the latter period discloses. The compiler of these records ventures to insert in this place the words with which he brought to a close the historical sermon preached in connection with the Golden Jubilee of the Parish: "The history of Trinity Church, as I read it in the official records, is one of constant struggle against financial troubles, of a series of crises and of deliverances, of alternate hope and despair.
