Robust and economically self-reliant, the Zulu Kingdom—created by Shaka kaSenzangakhona—was seen as a threat to British colonialism. In December 1878, the British High Commissioner in South Africa, Sir Henry Bartle Frere, picked a quarrel with the Zulu king, Cetshwayo kaMpande, in the belief that the Zulu army—armed primarily with shields and spears—would soon collapse in the face of British Imperial might. The war began in January 1879. Three columns of British troops under the command of Lt. Gen. Lord Chelmsford invaded Zululand. Almost immediately, the war went badly wrong for the British. On January 22, the Centre Column, under Lord Chelmsford’s personal command, was defeated at Isandlwana mountain. In one of the worst disasters of the colonial era, over 1,300 British troops and their African allies were killed. In the aftermath of Isandlwana, the Zulu reserves mounted a raid on the British border post at Rorke’s Drift, which was held by just 145 men. After ten hours of ferocious fighting, the Zulu were driven off. Eleven of the defenders of Rorke’s Drift were awarded the Victoria Cross. These are the best-known episodes of the war, and Rorke’s Drift went on to inspire the classic film Zulu, which established Michael Caine as a star. Drawing on new research performed since the centenary in 1979, the author delves deeply into the causes of the war, the conditions during it, and the aftermath.

Book excerpt: A cavalry officer's view of the Anglo-Zulu War There are several comprehensive histories of the Zulu War written during the time it was being fought or completed shortly after the cessation of hostilities. Whilst this book is one of them, several considerations make it exceptional. One of the authors was a serving cavalry officer in the campaign and so in addition to his reports of incidents based on his own personal experience much of his information came from reliable and candid conversations and interviews with fellow officers whilst the campaign was underway. This has resulted in the inclusion in this book of much detail concerning equipment, logistics, fortification measures etc. which has been overlooked by other reporters as potentially uninteresting to civilian readers. These matters were, of course, of every day importance to those who were dealing with them and this valuable information has been included here for military history students and posterity. Reports of actions are also finely drawn as a consequence of a thorough understanding of conditions in the field from a soldier's perspective. The account of the disaster on Hlobane mountain is particularly interesting and well formed. Wyatt Edgell, the 'on the spot' reporter was sending information back to England for the penmanship of Waller Ashe to craft into this book. Wyatt Edgell was an officer in the 17th Lancers and was, in fact, tragically killed at Ulundi. So this Leonaur edition also includes a brief history of the 17th Lancers during the Zulu War and additionally benefits from the inclusion of illustrations and battlefield maps which were not included with any of the original texts. The war with Cetywayo is identical in principle with those waged with Gaika, T'Slambie, Dingaan, Kreli, and Sandilli. The tide of savagery has been periodically rolled back, and it was either necessary that this should be done, or that white men should abandon Southern Africa. The fatuous policy of Lord Glenelg caused the wars of 1846 and 1852, and there is in essence no difference between it and the policy advocated by the opponents of Sir Bartle Frere.

If Sir Theophilus Shepstone had only waited long enough, the people would have begged upon their knees for protection and assistance when attacked by the enormous armies of the Zulu king. If we had intervened in such a crisis, we would have obtained the assistance--valuable assistance--of thousands of mounted burghers; whereas, when we did fight really for the Transvaal, its inhabitants were so disgusted with what had transpired, as to render almost no assistance. There is no doubt that we managed the annexation of this country badly, and have been compelled to suffer for it. By a policy of delay, which would certainly have been less kind but incomparably more wise, the people would have been forced to come as suppliants for protection and annexation. Their lives and property when threatened by Cetywayo, could have alone been saved by British intervention. It can certainly be argued, on the other side, that delay was particularly dangerous, and that if we had not at once established ourselves in the Transvaal, the Zulus would have lighted a fire which would have spread quickly throughout every native tribe, and have endangered the peace of all our settlements. Sir Theophilus Shepstone was in an excellent position to judge of the necessity, and her Majesty's Government has uniformly upheld the policy adopted by him in annexing the Transvaal. Sekukuni had proved a thorn in the side of the Eepublic which they had really been unable to get rid of.
