Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The landscape and people are the two most distinctive qualities of the Yorkshire Dales, and this book employs new sources and methods to help the reader see both in a different light. In earlier centuries, religious and social factors influenced the first names that were given to children. Distinctive surnames were inherited, and their expansion or decline can throw light on local communities, on migration and population growth. Place-names emerged from regional and customary practices that illuminate topography, husbandry, mining, communications and much more. Thebook also uses material from Quarter Sessions, title deeds, wills and other documents to investigate a wide range of topics that touch on the lives of individuals and families, from religious dissent to sheep-stealing and vagrancy. There is emphasis too on the poor, showing the impact on families and communities of bastardy, fire, flood, violence and other disasters. A book written for anyone interested in the local and family history of the Yorkshire Dales.

In this comprehensive account of these movements, reference is made to Quaker origins; to the older Dissent, both Independent and Presbyterian (and thence Unitarian); to the Inghamites and the Sandemanians: to the visits to the county of Fox, Nayler, Ingham, Whitefield, Wesley, and Woolman; to the coming of the Baptists; and to such later developments as Primitive and United Methodism, the Evangelical Union, the Brethren, and the Pentecostals.

Book Yorkshire Puritanism and Early Nonconformity

Download or read book Yorkshire Puritanism and Early Nonconformity written by Bryan Dale and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yorkshire Puritanism and Early Nonconformity: Illustrated by the Lives of the Ejected Ministers, 1660 and 1662 The late Rev. Bryan Dale, M.A., was, as is well-known, an accomplished and indefatigable student of the History of Nonconformity and Independency. He grudged no labour and research in collecting and amassing material bearing on this study, exploring for this purpose the archives of the British Museum, Lambeth Palace, the Bodleian Library, Oxford, as well as other sources of information. The result is very partially embodied in the present work on "Yorkshire Puritanism and Early Nonconformity." This has been carefully compiled from Mr. Dale's notes and ably edited by the Rev. T. G. Crippen, Secretary of the Congregational Historical Society. For the Nonconformist Churches of Yorkshire, and especially for those of the Congregational Faith and Order, this work should have a special interest and value. It is a monument to the men who, in the heroic age of Nonconformity, preferred to encounter homelessness, privation and suffering rather than purchase peace at the price of conscience, and buy off by unworthy compliance the resentment and intolerance of the then rulers of Church and State. It was Mr. Dale's purpose to write a full and comprehensive history of Congregationalism in Yorkshire. This was frustrated by growing physical incapacity. Had he been as zealous in the disposing and presentation of his material as he was in seeking and bringing it together, this History - doubtless in less complete form - would have been, long ere this, an accomplished fact. Book The Oxford History of Protestant Dissenting Traditions Volume III

Download or read book The Oxford History of Protestant Dissenting Traditions Volume III written by Timothy Larsen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-28 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The five-volume Oxford History of Dissenting Protestant Traditions series is governed by a motif of migration ('out-of-England'). It first traces organized church traditions that arose in England as Dissenters distanced themselves from a state church defined by diocesan episcopacy, the Book of Common Prayer, the Thirty-Nine Articles, and royal supremacy, but then follows those traditions as they spread beyond England -and also traces newer traditions that emerged downstream in other parts of the world from earlier forms of Dissent. Secondly, it does the same for the doctrines, church practices, stances toward state and society, attitudes toward Scripture, and characteristic patterns of organization that also originated in earlier English Dissent, but that have often defined a trajectory of influence independent ecclesiastical organizations. The Oxford History of Protestant Dissenting Traditions, Volume III considers the Dissenting traditions of the United Kingdom, the British Empire, and the United States in the nineteenth century. It provides an overview of the historiography on Dissent while making the case for seeing Dissenters in different Anglophone connections as interconnected and conscious of their genealogical connections. The nineteenth century saw the creation of a vast Anglo-world which also brought Anglophone Dissent to its apogee. Featuring contributions from a team of leading scholars, the volume illustrates that in most parts of the world the later nineteenth century was marked by a growing enthusiasm for the moral and educational activism of the state which plays against the idea of Dissent as a static, purely negative identity. This collection shows that Dissent was a political and constitutional identity, which was often only strong where a dominant Church of England existed to dissent against.
