Book History of the United States Navy Yard Portsmouth N H Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the United States Navy Yard Portsmouth N H Classic Reprint written by George Henry Preble and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the United States Navy-Yard, Portsmouth, N. H Dixy Bull, and 15 others, who had committed several acts of piracy and rifled the fort at Pemaquid. The pirates, however, had flown, and so escaped arrest. This, beyond a doubt, is the first naval expedition of a warlike nature ever fitted out from the Piscataqua. It is probable, says Cooper, that the party was composed of fur traders from Virginia, and that their conduct appeared to the Puritans of the East so, light in general that some trifling excesses were misconstrued into piracy. Book Portsmouth Harbor s Military and Naval Heritage

Download or read book Portsmouth Harbor s Military and Naval Heritage written by Nelson H. Lawry and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Including more than two hundred vintage photographs and illustrations, Portsmouth Harbor's Military and Naval Heritage chronicles the history of the Piscataqua River's naval shipyard and harbor defenses. Long before it became home to one of the U.S. Navy's first federal shipyards, the harbor at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and Kittery, Maine, was protected by gun batteries, mainly at Fort Point, New Castle, New Hampshire. By the end of World War II, modern concrete batteries mounting guns of ever longer range had been constructed at this and three other forts straddling the river's mouth. These fortifications reflected the increasingly important role of the shipyard, dedicated after 1917 to building submarines that contributed significantly to the World War II victory.

The oil lamp on the counter and the four dips in the windows made quite a brave show of light, and the tavern was the only place of public entertainment anywhere near the Dockyard gate; but, notwithstanding these attractions, the bar was empty. All the Dockyard men were gone home to their suppers, and the inn lay not in the way of chance customers.
