Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays focuses on the ways in which Greek and Latin authors viewed and wrote about the history of medicine in the ancient world. Special attention is given to medical doxography, i.e. the description of the characteristic doctrines of the great medical authorities of the past. The volume examines the various attitudes to the history of medicine adopted by a wide range of ancient writers (e.g. Aristotle, Galen, Celsus, Herophilus, Soranus, Oribasius, Caelius Aurelianus). It discusses the historical sense of ancient medicine, the variety of versions of the medical past that were created and the wide range of purposes and strategies which medico-historical writing served. It also deals with the question of the sources, the role of historiographical traditions and the variety of literary genres of ancient medico-historical writing.

Download or read book Promises Kept written by Janis Quinn and published by Taylor & Francis US. This book was released on 2005 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With very little money but with a groundswell of support from all sectors of the state, the two-year medical school at the University of Mississippi in Oxford became the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson in 1955. Including more than fifty photographs, Promises Kept traces the development of the medical center from one school and two hospital wings to a major center for professional health education with four hospitals, five schools, a work force of more than 7,500 and a $650 million annual budget. In the 1960s, medical center leadership faced the challenge of maintaining stability in a rapidly changing social order and accomplishing the peaceful racial integration among both patients and employees. Though often strapped for cash and amid crises and conflicts, the small medical center in the nation's poorest state stayed true to its mission. This history details the careers of medical center leaders who were dedicated to assuring that the institution never deviated from its focus on healing the sick, providing health professionals for Mississippi, and researching new ways of understanding and treating illness. The center nurtured the careers of two of the most important individuals in modern medicine, James D. Hardy and Arthur C. Guyton. In 1964 Hardy performed the world's first heart transplant three years before Christiaan Barnard. In 1956, Guyton published his Textbook of Medical Physiology, which to this day remains the most widely used textbook in the field, and the standard physiology text around the world. Using archival records, photographs, and other documents, Promises Kept: The University of Mississippi Medical Center is an overview of one of the state's most significant institutions. Janis Quinn of Florence, Mississippi, is a freelance writer whose work has been published in the Journal of the Mississippi State Medical Association, Journal of the Mississippi Dental Association, and Jackson Magazine.

Download or read book A History of Occupational Health and Safety written by Michelle Follette Turk and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States has a long and unfortunate history of exposing employees, the public, and the environment to dangerous work. But in April 2009, the spotlight was on Las Vegas when the Pulitzer committee awarded its public service prize to the Las Vegas Sun for its coverage of the high fatalities on Las Vegas Strip construction sites. The newspaper attributed failures in safety policy to the recent “exponential growth in the Las Vegas market.” In fact, since Las Vegas’ founding in 1905, rapid development has always strained occupational health and safety standards. A History of Occupational Health and Safety examines the work, hazards, and health and safety programs from the early building of the railroad through the construction of the Hoover Dam, chemical manufacturing during World War II, nuclear testing, and dense megaresort construction on the Las Vegas Strip. In doing so, this comprehensive chronicle reveals the long and unfortunate history of exposing workers, residents, tourists, and the environment to dangerous work—all while exposing the present and future to crises in the region. Complex interactions and beliefs among the actors involved are emphasized, as well as how the medical community interpreted and responded to the risks posed. Few places in the United States contain this mixture of industrial and postindustrial sites, the Las Vegas area offers unique opportunities to evaluate American occupational health during the twentieth century, and reminds us all about the relevancy of protecting our workers.
