Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Transvaal and the Boers: A Brief History The war which is now unhappily raging in South Africa has brought into special prominence the affairs of the two Boer States which are embroiled with us. Before the South African Republic and the Orange Free State pass out of independent existence, many may be glad to read their story in a convenient and impartial form. History, as Seeley and Freeman were so fond of reminding us, is but past politics, as politics are history in the making. So this book may be found of some use in the political discussions which have been silenced only for the moment by the bugles and the guns. To know how a thing has come into exist ence is no bad preliminary for knowing what it is; and only a competent acquaintance with the history of the two Boer States can throw light on some questions which have suddenly become of great practical importance to our Empire. When the Liberal ministry became an accomplished fact instead of a happy possibility, Mr. Gladstone did not find it convenient to adopt the line of policy with reference to the Transvaal that might have been expected from his utterances whilst leader of the Opposition. On the contrary, he declared in Parliament that the Annexation could not be cancelled, and on the 8th June 1880 we find him, in answer to a Boer petition, written with the object of inducing him to act up to the spirit of his words and rescind the Annexation, writing thus: --" Looking to all the circumstances, both of the Transvaal and the rest of South Africa, and to the necessity of preventing a renewal of disorders which might lead to disastrous consequences, not only to the Transvaal, but to the whole of South Africa, our judgmenD is, that the Queen cannot be advised to relinquish her sovereignty over the Transvaal; but, consistently with the maintenance of that sovereignty, we desire that the white inhabitants of the Transvaal should, without prejudice to the rest of the population, enjoy the fullest liberty to manage their local affairs. We believe that this liberty may be most easily and promptly conceded to the Transvaal as a member of a South African confederation." Unless words have lost their signification, this passage certainly means that the Transvaal must remain a British colony, but that England will be prepared to graut it responsible government, more especially if it will consent to a confederation scheme. Mr. Gladstone, however, in a communication dated 1st June 1881, and addressed to the unfortunate Transvaal loyals, for whom he expresses "respect and sympathy," interprets his meaning thus: "It is stated, as I observe, ...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Story of the Transvaal, From the "Great Trek" To the Convention of London: With Appendix Comprising Ministerial Declarations of Policy and Official Documents IN presenting a history of the Transvaal, and of our connection with it, I have to apologize for many shortcomings. The work has been compiled under considerable difficulties. The bulk Of it was written in a small up-country town, at a distance from all Official sources of information, and in the intervals of professional duties. It has been delayed by the loss at Port Elizabeth of nearly all the material I had collected, and by the difficulty of procuring correct and trustworthy accounts of the facts narrated. It has no pretension to any graces of style, and it does not aim at being more than a convenient book of reference. If it enables the readers to mete out blame where blame is due, and to accord praise where praise is merited, the object of the work will be effected. It has been objected by a friendly critic that I have been unduly severe in criticizing the military opera tions in the Transvaal. I regret as much as my critic that it has been necessary to be severe. It has been a most painful task to me to have to point out the deficiencies of our soldiers. But the truth must be told, and, painful though it may have been, I have felt it my duty not to blink facts even though they might be unpleasant. We are accustomed to take it forx iii I'm/are. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ignominious rout of a British force at the battle of Majuba on 27 February 1881 and the death of its commander, Major General Sir George Pomeroy-Colley, was the culminating British disaster in the humiliating Transvaal campaign of 1880-1881 in South Africa. For the victorious Boers who were rebelling against the British annexation of their republic in 1877, Majuba became the symbol of Afrikaner resistance against British imperialism. On the flip side, Majuba gave the late Victorian British army its first staggering experience of modern warfare and signalled the need for it to reassess its training and tactics. Based on both British and Boer archival and contemporary sources, this balanced and fresh appraisal of Majuba situates it in the closely interlocked operational and political contexts of the Transvaal campaign. It analyses the contrasting military organizations and cultures of the two sides and clarifies how a Boer citizen militia with no formal training, but that handled modern small arms with lethal effect and expertly employed fire and movement tactics, was able to defeat professional--but hidebound--British soldiers. The book explains how a British field commander, such as Colley, already subject to the factional politics of command, also found his conduct of military operations subject to the close supervision of his superiors in London at the other end of the telegraph wire. His strategic objective was to break through the Boer positions holding the passes between the colony of Natal and Transvaal and to relieve the scattered British garrisons blockaded by the Boers. However, his defeats at Laing's Nek on 28 January and at Ingogo on 8 February alarmed the British government already concerned that the war was stirring up dangerous anti-British Afrikaner nationalism across South Africa. It instructed Colley to cease operations and open peace negations with the Boers. But the general, a highly talented staff officer holding his first independent command, was determined to retrieve his tattered military reputation. He side-stepped his orders and, in an attempt to outflank the Boer positions and win the war at a stroke, seized Majuba with disastrous consequences. Although British reinforcements were now pouring in and the suppression of the Boer rebellion still seemed feasible, Majuba was the last straw for the British government. To the disgust of the military who burned to expunge the shame of Majuba with a resounding victory, the politicians insisted on restoring the Transvaal Boers their independence

CHAPTER XI THE TWO CONVENTIONS AND THEIR SEQUEL, l88l--1886 The definite settlement of the terms of peace had been left after Majuba to a Royal Commission. Sir Evelyn Wood, who had carried on the negotiations so far, was, of course, appointed a member of this Commission. With him were associated Sir Hercules Robinson and Sir J. H. de Villiers, the Governor and Chief Justice of the Cape Colony. The Commission sat between April and August, hearing the proposals of the Boers and the complaints of the loyalists. Finally it produced the Convention of Pretoria, which was formally signed on 3rd August, 1881, and which, in its attempt to combine Boer independence with British suzerainty, pleased neither party, and was destined to be replaced by the Convention of London in less than three years. During the sitting of the Commission, the Transvaal remained nominally in the hands of the English; it was really at the mercy of the Boers, the more reckless and unscrupulous amongst whom took every opportunity of paying off the old scores that had been run up by the loyalists. The Law Courts avoided issuing any process, lest their messenger should be shot in contempt of court. Boers who had been friendly to England were threatened with death. Englishmen who returned to their farms were insulted, and sometimes plundered. Two Bechuana chiefs, Montsioa and Mankoroane, who had offered help to Sir George Colley, were attacked, the loyalists being "commandeered," or pressed into military service against them, according to the familiar practice of the Boers, who consider it excellent policy to make the disaffected fight their battles and save the skins of the good citizens. In short, the whole country was in a state of turmoil and lawlessness, natural enough...
