Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Star Spangled Banner From 1814 to the Present In the meantime various patriotic organizations and individuals began taking up the cause of Congressional recognition of the Star Spangled Banner, although critics of the song were saying that recognition was out of the question, because the song expressed an Anglophobic attitude, and was also difficult to sing. The numerous bills introduced in the Congress by various legislators bemeen 1910 and 1931 seeking Congressional recognition of the Star Spangled Banner all failed, until finally, after several unsuccessful attempts, Rep. J. Charles Linthicum introduced a Bill on 'april 15, 1929. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Star Spangled Banner: Revised and Enlarged From the "Report" On the Above and Other Airs, Issued in 1909 As a prelude to this chapter it is not necessary, but it may not be inadvisable to state, in view of certain tendencies to the contrary in the matter of The star-spangled Banner, that research in musical history, in common with every other kind of historical research, aims solely at the orderly establishment of facts and the logical interpretation of available f acts. Such facts or the conclusions from such facts may not always be welcome, but the historian is or should be a seeker after historical truth, often enough stranger and more romantic than fiction. He should never allow possible preferences of his compatriots or his personal idiosyncrasies to obscure his historical vision. For instance, every patriotic American would rejoice, with the author of this Report, if it could be shown by documentary or other unimpeachable evidence that The star-spangled Banner, both in words and music, was of American origin. If that can not be shown, then every patriotic American will be sensible enough not to betray imitation of his patriotic pride because the music of our star-spangled Banner had its origin in some monarchical country of Eumpe, whether that be Turkey, Russia, Germany, France. Book The Star Spangled Banner Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Star Spangled Banner Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Oscar George Theodore Sonneck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Star Spangled Banner, Vol. 1 In the Report on 'the star-spangled Banner, ' 'hail Columbia, ' 'america, ' 'yankee Doodle' (washington, Government Printing Office, the chapter on The star-spangled Banner began with an account of the origin of Francis Scott Key's poem. This was followed by a brief summary of the European and American history' of the tune To Anacreon in Heaven, to which The Star Spangled Banner is sung, by a comparative investigation of extant manuscripts of Key's poem, and finally by a survey of the different versions of the melody as now in use. For this revised and enlarged edition of the chapter a division into two independent sections was found to be more logical and convenient, one on To Anacreon in Heaven, the other on The star-spangled Banner proper. As a prelude to this chapter it is not necessary, but it may not be inadvisable to state, in view of certain tendencies to the contrary in the matter of The star-spangled Banner, that research in musical history, in common with every other kind of historical research, aims solely at the orderly establishment of facts and the logical interpretation of available facts. If that can not be Shown, then every patriotic American will be sensible enough not to betray irritation of his patriotic pride because the music of our star-spangled Banner had its origin in some monarchical country of Europe, whether that be Turkey, Russia, Germany, France. Book excerpt: "When Francis Scott Key saw the United States flag still flying over Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland - signifying that the city had withstood the overnight British bombardment - he immediately sat down and wrote the words to "The Star-Spangled Banner." Since that September morning in 1814, the flag and the national anthem have occupied a special place in the hearts of Americans. The flag that withstood the "bombs bursting in air" and inspired the anthem has been cared for by the Smithsonian and exhibited to the public for almost a century. Here is the dramatic story." --Back cover.

Book excerpt: The Star-Spangled Banner: Its Preparation, Purpose, and Preservation was written to share a segment of the true history of what so many have fought and died for. Here is a miraculous set of events behind the story of preparing the flag and how the large flag inspired the well-known patriotic poem. Do you know who hand-sewed the flag? How were the stitches crafted? How many weeks did it take to make the flag by hand? How much did it cost the government to have the flag made? How does a star become spangled in appearance? As Fort McHenry daily waves the country's flag in memory of the 1814 battle, may we also appreciate God's divine intervention on our forefathers. Please join us in celebrating the history of the most sacred Smithsonian treasure. 'Tis the star-spangled banner-- O long may it wave.
