Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the St. Paul and Sioux City Railroad, 1864-1881 In 1865 the road was located and constructed from M'endota to Shakopee, 22 miles; and in 1866 it was extended eastward from Mendota to West St. Paul, 6 miles, terminating at South Wabasha street, near where a freight yard and depot were re established last year (in and was extended westward from Shakopee to Belle Plaine, 19 miles. Making then, in all, 47 miles of completed road. About the first of April, 1867, the writer was appointed chief engineer, and under his supervision the location and con struction Of successive extensions were completed to Le Sueur in 1867, to Mankato in 1868, to Lake Crystal in 1869, and to St. James, 122 miles from St. Paul, in 1870. Meantime, in 1869, the Minnesota Valley Railroad Com pany and the Minnesota Central Railroad Company (since ab sorbed by the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway Com pany) joined in the construction of the bridge over the Missis sippi river, and Of the line from Pickerel lake (two miles east of Mendota) to and over said bridge and to the site Of the pres ent Union Depot in St. Paul; our company building a freight house, 40 by 300 feet, on the river bank at the foot of Robert street, so arranged on the river side as to exchange freight with steamboats, there being then no direct railway connection at St. Paul for the east or south. Part I, Missouri's Divided Loyalties, and Part II, Missouri's Five Seasons, provide an overview of Missouri's history from the initial settlement of the Louisiana Purchase Territories through the opening years of the American Civil War. The remaining parts cover the Confederate plan, the Confederate movement into Missouri and the Union reaction, the Confederate retreat and Union pursuit into Kansas, and the final Confederate escape back into Arkansas. The atlas has a standard format with the map to left and the narrative to the right. Each narrative closes with two or more primary source vignettes. These vignettes provide an overview of the events shown on the map and discussed in the narrative from the perspective of persons who participated in the events. In most cases there are two vignettes with the first from a person loyal to the Union and the second from a person who supported the southern cause. A few narratives have two or more vignettes from only the Union side. This was done to emphasize disagreements and struggles among senior leaders to establish a common course of action. Map 25, Decision at the Little Blue River, is a good example and the three vignettes emphasize the disagreement between Maj. Gen. Samuel Curtis and his subordinate, Maj. Gen. James Blunt on where to locate the Union defensive line.
