Book World Silver and Monetary History in the 16th and 17th Centuries

Download or read book World Silver and Monetary History in the 16th and 17th Centuries written by Dennis O. Flynn and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection reflects the evolution of a revisionist argument. The price revolution was indeed a monetary phenomenon, but Professor Flynn's position is not based upon mainstream monetary theory. Silver mines financed the Spanish Empire and Japan's consolidation. Ming China was the world's primary silver customer; Europeans acted as middlemen globally, including massive trade over the Pacific via Manila. American mines nearly led to the destruction of nascent capitalism in Europe (reverse of arguments by Hamilton, Keynes, Wallerstein and others). Silver-market disequilibrium caused silver's gravitation toward China; bullion did not flow to Asia due to European trade deficits. Such conclusions stem from application of the Doherty-Flynn model developed in the mid-1980s. Economic theory is normally applied to economic history; in contrast, development of the Doherty-Flynn model was a response to inadequate conventional theory. Theory emerged from history; its application back to history yields startling historical reinterpretations.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ecclesiastical and Political History of the Popes of Rome During the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, Vol. 2 of 2 Like travellers who quit some range of lofty mountains commanding a wide and magnificent prospect, to enter a valley which circumscribes their view within its narrow boundaries, we pass from the survey of the great events of the world's history in which the papacy played so important a part, to the observation of the occurrences peculiar to the States of the Church. The States of the Church first attained to their complete constitution in the times of Urban VIII. At this epoch let us begin their history. Book The Professions in Early Modern England

Download or read book The Professions in Early Modern England written by Wilfrid Prest and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-18 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1987, The Professions in Early Modern England highlights the significant role of professional and quasi-professional occupations in English society before the industrial revolution, contrary to what was once historiographical and sociological orthodoxy. The editorial introduction provides an overview of the history of the professions as a distinct field of scholarly investigation, suggesting that neither historians nor social theorists have adequately mapped or explained the rise of the professions to their present place in modern societies. The following chapters bring together original contributions by researchers who have made a close study of various occupational groups over the period c. 1500-1750. Besides the traditional learned professions and their practitioners in the church, medicine and the law, they survey occupations generally lacking institutional coherence: school teachers, estate stewards and those following the profession of arms. This book remains of interest to students of history, literature and sociology.
