Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history relates the story of one of the British Army's fighting Irish units from the middle of the 19th century to its disbandment on the attainment of Irish independence in 1922. Originating in India as the 101st Regiment of Foot (Royal Bengal Fusiliers) the Munster Fusiliers subsequently served in the Boer War. The bulk of this history, however, covers their distinguished record in the Great War when they were deployed at Gallipoli - being among the units that landed on 'V Beach' from the 'River Clyde' on April 25th 1915. The Munsters subsequently landed at Suvla Bay in August 1915, and continued to serve in the Dardanelles until the evacuaion in January 1916. After being re-deployed to France in March 1916, the Munsters served at Ginchy on the Somme; at Wytschaete in the battle of Messines in June 1917; at Cambrai in November 1917; and resisted the German offensive in March 1918. They took part inn the final Allied advance to victory from July 1918, serving on the Drocourt-Queant Line; and the Canal du Nord. The Munsters were formally disbanded in July 1922. This is a handsome unit history, with colour illustrations, which will fascinate any student of the Great War - particularly Gallipoli- and anyone interest in the Irish units of he British Army.

Book excerpt: This history is dedicated to The Royal Munster Fusiliers, in Glorious Memory of Their Illustrious Origin, The Bengal European Regiment, of whose Honour, Fame, and Decorations They are the Inheritors and Trusted Guardians. The origins of the regiment go back a hundred years before Plassey, to the very early days of the East India Company when each of the three Presidencies (Bengal, Madras and Bombay) had their own armies of Native and European troops. The latter were initially organised in companies and it was as a small guard of honour (an Ensign and thirty men) that the Bengal Regiment began life in 1652. This grew into several companies till 1756 when, under Clive s orders, they were grouped to form the regiment, then known as The Bengal European Battalion. In 1839 a second Bengal European Regiment was formed so we now had the 1st and 2nd Regiments. In 1858 the Presidencies European regiments were taken over by the Crown and the two Bengal regiments became 1st and 2nd Bengal Fusiliers, redesignated in 1861 as 101st Royal Bengal Fusiliers and the 104th Bengal Fusiliers. It was in 1881 they became 1st and 2nd Battalions The Royal Munster Fusiliers. This book really is an account of the conquest of India by the British. It opens in 1644 (back home the Civil War was at its height) with a look at the political causes which led to the formation of the regiment. The enemies were not only the Native Rulers but also the French, Portuguese, Dutch and Danes all of whom had to be dealt with - the most powerful being the French. The narrative covers all these events which involved the regiment in frequent fighting. At the beginning of the book is a list of the Regiment s war services from 1756 to 1858 - no less than 83 wars, battles and engagements, all are described in these pages and at the end of each chapter is a select list of references or bibliography. From time to time lists of officers serving in the regiment are given as are casualties in various actions. But it is not just war. There are interesting details on reorganisation, on pay and conditions of service, on dress and establishments, all making this a very comprehensive history.

Book Kerry the Royal Munster Fusiliers

Download or read book Kerry the Royal Munster Fusiliers written by Alan Drumm and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2012-01-31 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ballymullen Barracks in Tralee was the regimental depot of the Royal Munster Fusiliers prior to the establishment of the Irish Free State. It was through the barracks gates that Kerrymen enlisted for a career in the Munsters. Kerry and the Royal Munster Fusiliers examines the reasons why Kerrymen enlisted during the Great War, and how these citizens-turned-soldiers endured the World War they found themselves participating in. By using local sources, this book documents the rapidly changing political situation in Kerry, how support for the conflict diminished after 1916, and how this change affected the returning soldiers.

Book excerpt: This brief account of the 1st Battalion of the Royal Munster Fusiliers at Gallipoli is built on the letters and other accounts of the participants which were published at the time and are very much of the time in their style and thought. Many of those who have an interest in the history of the Munsters will be aware of the diaries, etc, of G. W. Geddes, G. W. Nightingale and Denis Moriarty much of which are available online or are quoted in many well-known publications. This account sidelines these well-known Munsters to concentrate on the men and lesser-known officers of the Battalion in order to tell the story of the 1st Munsters at Gallipoli in 1915. It also includes an extensive casualty list and other genealogical details.

Book excerpt: AMBROSE & DOROTHY The Story of War and Love of a Royal Munster Fusilier Letters he wrote home during World War I tell the story of Ambrose Keevil and the love of his life, Dorothy Andrews. The two met in 1910 and she became engaged to a good friend of his, a French cavalry offi cer named Georges, who died in 1914. Ambrose was there in spirit-via letters-to comfort the grieving Dorothy. Their correspondence shares the romance that blossomed, leading to their marriage in 1918. Enlisting in the Royal Fusiliers-and commissioned into the 6th Royal Munster Fusiliers as a second lieutenant to the 10th Irish Division-Ambrose served in Serbia, Greece, Palestine, Macedonia, Egypt and France before the war was over. He and the division battled in Gallipoli and the Salonika Campaign, and he wasn't unscathed, surviving wounds, being gassed and suffering from malaria. His gallant service led to recognition with two Military Crosses, an MBE, and a Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur, as well as being knighted by the queen. Ambrose and Dorothy: The Story of War and Love of a Royal Munster Fusilier, written and researched by Ambrose's grandson, serves as both a family memoir and a history lesson on one of the most sobering times in world history and one of the most illustrious military organizations, the Royal Munster Fusiliers.

Download or read book Beneath a Turkish Sky written by Philip Lecane and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the First World War’s largest seaborne invasion and the Irish were at the forefront. Recruited in Ireland, the Royal Dublin Fusiliers were ordered to spearhead the invasion of Gallipoli in Turkey. Deadlocked in trench warfare on the Western Front, the British High Command hoped the assault would knock Germany’s ally out of the war. Using letters and photographs, this book tells the story of the ‘Dubs’ officers and men as they set off on what was presented as a great adventure to win glory and capture Constantinople. Accompanied by the Royal Munster Fusiliers, packed aboard the SS River Clyde, the ‘Dubs’ landed from ships’ boats on the fiercely defended beach at Sedd-el-Bahr. The song The Foggy Dew says, ‘It were better to die beneath an Irish sky than at Suvla or Sedd-el-Bahr.’ This book tells the story of the forgotten Irishmen who died beneath a Turkish sky in what was Ireland’s D-Day.

This book was released on 2012-02-09 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 2 of 2. 'The Great War and the disbandment of the regiment' is a substantial record of service in many theatres of the war, in which the regiment's battalions saw service from the war's outbreak in 1914 - taking part in the first battle of the Aisne and the 'Race to the Sea' - through 1915 when it was in the Ypres Salient and also participated in the ill-fated Gallipoli expedition and in Macedonia. In 1916 io took part in the Battle of the Somme - but was also employed in suppressing the Irish repubican Easter Rising in Dublin. 1917 saw the regiment in action in Egypt and the Palestine campaign, as well as Canada's famous capture of Vimy Ridge on the western front. The end of the year brought the gruelling battles of Passchendaele and Cambrai. In 1918 the regiment withstood the German Spring offensives, before taking part in the victorious allied advance which led to the armistice. Prior to its disbanding in 1922, the regiment was stationed in the occupied Rhineland, in India and was on peac-keeping duties in Silesia, disputed btweeen Germany and Poland. This is a meaty history, which will interest anyone curious about Canada’s colonial regiments, and their role in the Great War. Volume II has eight illustrations and fourteen maps. Both volumes come with an index.
