Book excerpt: History of the Reign of Muley Ismael, the Present King of Morocco, Fez, Tafilet, Sous, & c. Of the Revolt and Tragical End of Several of his Sons, and of his wives Of the Horrid Executions of Many of His Officers and Subjects Of His Genius, Policy and Arbitrary Government Of the Cruel Persecution of the Christian Slaves in his Dominions: With an account of the three voyages to Miquenez and Couta in order to Ransom them By F. Dominick Busnot, one of the Commissaries for the Redemption of Captives in the Dominions of Morocco This is the translation into English in 1715 of the work of Friar Dominique Busnot published the previous year in French in 1714. Muley Ismael ibn Sharif was born in 1634 or in 1645. He became King of Morocco in 1672 and ruled for 55 years until his death on 22 March 1727. He was a great builder and many famous buildings still standing in Morocco were built by him. He is also known as "Ismail The bloodthirsty" for his legendary cruelty. In order to intimidate rivals, Ismail once ordered that his city walls be adorned with 10,000 heads of slain enemies. During the half century of Ismail's rule, he is estimated to have killed 30,000 men. Despite his numerous faults, he is considered to be one of the greatest men in the history of Morocco. The present King of Morocco is a direct descendant. There is a Mouley Ismail University in Merkes today. It is largely because of him that Morocco is the only African nation that has never been occupied by a European power. After completing the unification of Morocco, Moulay Ismail decided to end the Christian presence in the country. He initially launched a campaign to retake the city of Tangier from the English that had not been under Moroccan control since 1471. He succeeded when the English under seige decided to withdraw from Tangier in 1684. Against the opposition of local tribes, Mulay Ismael began to create a unified state. With his Riffian Army, he not only seized Tangier from the English in 1684 but also drove the Spanish from Larache 1689. After his death in 1727, the next 15 Kings of Morocco were his different sons. Finally, on 10 November 1757, the first of his grandsons became the king, and ruled until 1790. The present king of Morocco is the 9th great-grandson of Mulay Ismail. The Guinness Books of World Records credits Mulay Ismail with having the most children of any man in history, with more than one thousand children. Scholarly studies and mathematical calculations have been done to determine if it was even possible for a man to have that many children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hero or Monster? Empire of Clay: The Reign of Moulay Ismail, Sultan of Morocco (1672-1727) assesses contrasting views of Morocco's longest-serving monarch. On the surface, Moulay Ismail's 55-year reign was momentous: he consolidated a new dynasty, the Alaouites; he developed a professional army of soldier-slaves, the Abid al-Bukhari, which he used to crush domestic opposition; he created a sprawling new capital at Meknes; and he returned to Moroccan control several cities held by England and Spain. On the international scene, he raised Morocco's profile in courting Louis XIV of France and James II of England. However, his legacy is an equivocal one. The cost of these successes was enormous: hundreds of thousands enslaved, as many or more killed through war and repression, including scores murdered by Ismail himself; and a state driven toward ruin by the ruler's obsessions. In the Age of Absolutism, no ruler was more powerful or more feared.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holy War and Human Bondage: Tales of Christian-Muslim Slavery in the Early-Modern Mediterranean tells a story unfamiliar to most modern readers—how this pervasive servitude involved, connected, and divided those on both sides of the Mediterranean. The work explores how men and women, Christians and Muslims, Jews and sub-Saharan Africans experienced their capture and bondage, while comparing what they went through with what black Africans endured in the Americas. Drawing heavily on archival sources not previously available in English, Holy War and Human Bondage teems with personal and highly felt stories of Muslims and Christians who personally fell into captivity and slavery, or who struggled to free relatives and co-religionists in bondage. In these pages, readers will discover how much race slavery and faith slavery once resembled one other and how much they overlapped in the Early-Modern mind. Each produced its share of personal suffering and social devastation—yet the whims of history have made the one virtually synonymous with human bondage while confining the other to almost complete oblivion.

Book excerpt: The human race spends a disproportionate amount of attention, money, and expertise in solving, trying, and reporting homicides, as compared to other social problems. The public avidly consumes accounts of real-life homicide cases, and murder fiction is more popular still. Nevertheless, we have only the most rudimentary scientific understanding of who is likely to kill whom and why. Martin Daly and Margo Wilson apply contemporary evolutionary theory to analysis of human motives and perceptions of self-interest, considering where and why individual interests conflict, using well-documented murder cases. This book attempts to understand normal social motives in murder as products of the process of evolution by natural selection. They note that the implications for psychology are many and profound, touching on such matters as parental affection and rejection, sibling rivalry, sex differences in interests and inclinations, social comparison and achievement motives, our sense of justice, lifespan developmental changes in attitudes, and the phenomenology of the self. This is the first volume of its kind to analyze homicides in the light of a theory of interpersonal conflict. Before this study, no one had compared an observed distribution of victim-killer relationships to "expected" distribution, nor asked about the patterns of killer-victim age disparities in familial killings. This evolutionary psychological approach affords a deeper view and understanding of homicidal violence.
