Book History of the Presbyterian Church in South Carolina Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Presbyterian Church in South Carolina Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by George Howe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Presbyterian Church in South Carolina, Vol. 2 In the vear 1849, the Synod of South Carolina adopted a scheme for securing a History of the Church covered by their jurisdiction. The scheme was elaborate, embracing many particulars: and it was the pleasure of Svnod to appoint the present writer their Historio grapher. The ofiice involved an amount of labor and consumption of time, in the preparation of the first volume, of whlch he did not have the least conception, although the scheme, as marked out, was not fully aecom plished. The History was to be brought down to 1850, the middle of this Century. In 1870 the first volume was issued, bringing the work down to the year 1800. The volume which is now issued, has been prepared at such intervals as could be secured in vacation, when the author was relieved from his ordinary official duties. As the whole of an ordinary generation has passed away-since the year 1850, the year tn which his appointment extended, it has been the desire of the author to bring the History down more nearly to the present time, and he had, to some extent, received the materials for doing so. But dur ing the past Summer his health began seriously to fail him, and his most judicious friends advised him to stop at the original limit of saying that it was the proper place to stop: that the History of the Church through our-late civil war, and the efforts it put forth in those days of supreme trial and since, deserve a fuller treatment than he could now give it. To this advice he has yielded, and although this did not occur until the work showed manifest allusions in several instances to a later period, he removed from the remainder of his manu script all such references, except those which could not well be erased. Some of the materials furnished from the Churches are brief. Others far more extended, which, in some instances, have been greatlv abbre viated, and in others more amply given. The author is fully conscious of the many defects of his work, and submits the result of his labors to that indulgence of his brethren which it so greatly needs. Book History of the Congregations of the United Presbyterian Church Vol 2 of 2

This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Congregations of the United Presbyterian Church, Vol. 2 of 2: From 1733 to 1900 The 1eception which the first volume has met with is more encouraging than I had ventured to hope for. Interest, of course, has been confined very much to the United Free Church and, as was to be expected, to the United Presbyterian section thereof. After two rivers have peacefully coalesced they may show for a time by the colour of their waters that they had flowed in separate channels. The bitterest complaint I have met with has been the reverse of what was looked for. I have been blamed for conceal ment of facts - one example being that I wound up a minister's course by simply stating that he was loosed from his charge whereas I ought to have told that the root evil was drink. There are cases in which more may be read between the lines than is expressed, and balancing between the feelings of relatives and the claims of truth is like attempting to split the apple under the terror of wounding the child. Looking back over the completed work I see many omissions which cannot now be supplied, eug books ignored, owing to the author's limited reading, or because they did not come within the current of his narrative. Minor inaccuracies are certain to be discovered. It is as when a wayfaring man, having passed through a locality, describes it to a general audience, among whom one or two are natives of the place and familiar with its every nook and crevice. Download or read book The Constitutional History of the Presbyterian Church Vol 2 written by Charles Hodge and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Constitutional History of the Presbyterian Church, Vol. 2: In the United States of America; 1741 to 1788 The design of this history is to exhibit the character and constitution of the Presbyterian Church in the United States. To accomplish this object, it was necessary to bring to view, not only the declarations, but the acts of its highest judicatory. The work has thus become rather a history of the synod, than of the whole church, and does not pretend to enter into those details, which would be necessary in a more comprehensive work. Those controversies, however, which affected the action of the synod, come legitimately within the scope of this history. Hence an account of the great revival which occurred towards the middle of the last century, was necessary, in order to render intelligible the history of the dissentions which agitated and ultimately divided the synod. To that revival therefore, the introductory chapter of the present volume is devoted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book History of the Second Presbyterian Church Charlotte North Carolina 1873 1947 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-08-29 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Second Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, North Carolina, 1873-1947 At the time of the Silver Jubilee, October 22-24, 1898, Colonel I. B. Rankin wrote the historical sketch of the first twenty-five years. He was well qualified to do this for he was among the first members received by the Commission appointed by Presbytery to organize the church, he was one of the first elders elected, and he served as clerk of the session for thirty years. A large portion of this sketch is used. There has been such a wealth of interesting material that it has been difficult to decide what to include. We have culled hundreds of church bulletins, the session records, and a mass of newspaper clippings left by Miss Sallie Phillips among her papers. We have also found the minutes of the General Assembly since 1873, especially the statistical portions, a very interesting and fruitful source of information. We are grateful to the many people who have helped us to assemble these facts. Events such as births and deaths, which have occurred since the formation of the Covenant Church, have not been recorded. Book Manual for the Use of the Members of the Second Presbyterian Church Vol 5

Download or read book Manual for the Use of the Members of the Second Presbyterian Church Vol 5 written by Thomas Smyth and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual for the Use of the Members of the Second Presbyterian Church, Vol. 5: Charleston, S. C., Prepared Under the Direction of the Church This publication, it is hoped, will prove useful to the members of the Second Presbyterian Church and congregation. It will do so, by imparting all that information which is so desirable to those who connect themselves with any society. The origin, history, and progress of the church, is here disclosed; its present condition delineated; its rules and regulations declared; its officers, elders and members published. It will do so, by giving form and character to the church; by attaching to its history and doings, their reasonable importance; and thus making it an object of greater interest and regard. It will do so, by treasuring up, for future generations, the correct history of the present and the past, - ere time has rolled its oblivious wave over the transactions of by-gone days. It will do so, by constituting a bond of union among the members of the church - making them acquainted with each other, and with all that is done in the church; and thus promoting union, harmony, and brotherly love. In olden times, "they that feared the Lord, spake often one to another, and the Lord hearkened and heard it." The great obstacles to a personal acquaintance, and familiar intercourse among Christians, in a city like this, are, their wide dispersion, the continual change in their places of residence, and the consequent difficulty of ascertaining where they reside, from year to year. The following manual will obviate these difficulties. Every member of the church may be furnished with it; and, it is hoped, will feel the obligation of cultivating that spirit of mutual intercourse, which has, in former years, been so productive of good to this people. "A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another." "Hereby know we, that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren." "Thereby shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one towards another." And if the directions given in the introductory discourses, and in the conclusion of the volume, are in any good degree followed, will they not very powerfully contribute to the advancement of holy living, and thus prepare for holy dying? Let every member of the church and congregation, put themselves in immediate possession of this little volume. Let them read it at least once a year. Let them endeavour to reduce its rules to practice, and to act upon its suggestions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
