Book History of the National Bank Currency Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the National Bank Currency Classic Reprint written by Alexander Dana Noyes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the National-Bank Currency It should be noticed, to begin with, that the founders of the present national-bank note system frankly recog nized and avowed other purposes than the simple purpose of establishing a sound and elastic currency. They had in view two special considerations, each of which was of greater immediate importance in 1864 than elasticity in the currency, but neither of which is of vital importance at the present day. The two foremost problems of the Administration in 1864 were, first, to finance the civil war; second, to provide for the future cementing of the union of the States. This explains why, advocating in his report of 1862 a system of bank-note currency secured by government bonds, the Secretary of the Treasury set forth, as the chief advantages of such a system, that the negotiation of bond issues by the Government would be greatly facilitated; that it is not easy to appreciate the full advantages of such conditions to a government obliged to borrow; that it would reconcile, as far as practicable, the interests of existing institutions with those of the whole people; and that it would provide a firm anchorage to the union of the States. Book The Coming Battle

Download or read book The Coming Battle written by Martin Wetzel Walbert and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coming Battle: A Complete History of the National Banking Money Power in the United States In this volume the author endeavors to give an accurate history of the present National Bank System of currency, including an account of the first United States Bank, - both of which were borrowed from Great Britain by those statesmen who, like the father of Sir Robert Peel, believed that a national debt was the source of prosperity. It is believed that the facts adduced in the following pages will be productive of some good, in pointing out the immense evils lurking in that system of banking, - a system which has produced panics at will, and which is the active abettor of the stock gamblers, rail road wreckers, and those industrial tyrants of modern times, the enormously overcapitalized and oppressive trusts. It is sought to point out the great dangers of delegat ing purely government powers to these greedy monopo lists, by which they are enabled to organize a money trust, far more tyrannical than all the other combina tions now in existence; and by which they absolutely defy the authority that endowed them with corporate life. Appear in the form of silver certificates. The amount of national bank notes has been declining. The high price of bonds, the decreasing quantity, and the low rate of interest has put a blight on the national bank system. And unless other (good?) securities are found to supply the place of United States bonds, the national banks as issuers of paper money will cease in the near future upon the extinction of the interest bearing public debt, if not before. Book The Whelps of the Tigress

Download or read book The Whelps of the Tigress written by R. M. Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Whelps of the Tigress: A Resume of the National Banking System In his first report to Congress in December 1861, Secre tary of the Treasury Chase recommended the establishment of a national banking system upon substantially the same plan as that afterward adopted. His avowed purpose in making this recommendation was to establish a currency of uniform value throughout the country to take the place of the varying and uncertain State bank currency then in ex istence. He lived, however, to express his regrets at having been instrumental in establishing the present system. At the opening of the regular session of Congress in De cember, 1861, a sub-committee of the Committee of Ways and Means was appointed to consider the recommendations of Secretary Chase in regard to the proposed national bank currency, the issue of Treasury notes and bonds, and the mode of raising means to carry on the war. This sub committee, consisting of Messrs. Spaulding, Hooper and Coming, at Once went' to work and prepared a national bank currency bill of sixty sections, one section of which provided for an issue of legal tender Treasury notes. The bill as prepared was not introduced at this time, however. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Money and Banking

Download or read book Money and Banking written by Horace White and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Money and Banking: Illustrated by American History Very few persons, if any, are satisfied with our present monetary condition. While I write these lines a withdrawal of $2, 3 gold from the Treasury causes a fresh tremor and confusion of tongues. Everybody assures everybody else, and tries to assure himself, that it is of no consequence. Probably no harm will come of it, but why should it be noticed at all, except by a few dealers in foreign exchange? Because the public Treasury undertakes to maintain the ultimate gold reserve of the country, and because people doubt whether it can do so at all times. Are these doubts unreasonable? The only law on the statute book really effective for the discharge of this obligation was passed in 1862 for a different emergency, had been forgotten a quar ter of a century, and was discovered by accident the last day in the afternoon. As regards the act of 187 5 (under which gold was twice procured last year for the replenish ment of the Treasury) it is a matter of dispute whether it is still in force, or whether it lapsed when specie payments were resumed. A dispute on such a question is itself an incentive to panic. Moreover, everything depends upon the mood and temper of the Administration for the time being whether such powers as the law confers shall be exercised wisely and promptly, or exercised at all. Book A National Currency Classic Reprint

Download or read book A National Currency Classic Reprint written by Sidney George Fisher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-08 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A National Currency The paper money created by the government under the stress of the present war has been generally accepted by the people. It performs all the offices of money as a medium of exchange. It represents all sums from the largest to the smallest. It passes readily from hand to hand, and is of equal value in all parts of the country. Considering the character of the struggle in which we are engaged, this surely may be regarded as a financial achievement of no ordinary merit. But for the currency thus furnished, the North ern States would have afforded a spectacle very different from their present prosperous activity, and the conduct of the war, on the vast Scale rendered necessary by the extent of the rebel lion, would have been impossible.
