Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Military Company of the Massachusetts, Now Called the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts, 1637-1888, Vol. 2: 1738-1821 Publication and to the historian of the Company, and has been helpful in the preparation of this second volume. It was originally intended that this volume should cover the entire period of the second century of the Company's existence; but the large number of members of the Company active in the Revolutionary War, and the prominent parts they took in the stirring events in and around Boston during that period, defeated the original intention. This volume, therefore, ends with the town government of Boston and the third volume will commence with the year 1822, when the city government of Boston was inaugurated. In 1783, just after the declaration of peace, the population of Boston numbered about ten thousand in 1821, forty-five thousand. Young men from various parts of New England rushed to its metropolis and established themselves in trade or mechanical pursuits. Many of them became members of the Artillery Company, some of whom, after a short residence in Boston, removed to other localities. It has been impossible to learn whence some of them came or whither they went. The facts recorded concerning these members are therefore comparatively few. The arbitrary system adopted in the former volume is continued in this. Each year, from 1738 to 1821, is complete in itself. The records of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company are given in full in this and the preceding volume, from the earliest preserved record (1698) until the year 1800. Subsequent, to the last mentioned date, those portions of the records which are of value in presenting a correct account of the Company are inserted in the text. During the present century, the records have been kept with much care, and enter largely into the details of Company affairs. Such matters as reports of committees on arrangements for anniversaries, names and number of guests invited, names of members admitted or discharged, and minor details of Company business are omitted, while the essential facts, constituting a portion of the history of the Company, have been recorded in their appropriate places. This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Military Company of the Massachusetts, Now Called the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts, 1637-1888, Vol. 4 The frontispiece is a copy of a drawing of the Old Town House of Boston, which was made by Mr. George A. Clough, architect, of Boston, and is presented to the committee for insertion in this volume by Edmund S. Joy, Esq., of New York City. The drawing is based upon descriptions given in the original contract now in the possession of the Massachusetts Historical Society. The original contract, and other papers referring to the Old Town House, arc printed in Appendix A of the several editions of the Old State House Memorial, published by the city of Boston. Prior to the erection of the Town House, the town meetings and "general" and "great quarter" courts were held in the meeting houses, the first one (1654-40) being on the site of the Brazier Building, and the second (1641-58) being on the site of the Joy Building. As the population increased, the meeting house became inadequate. Capt. Keayne (1637), intelligent, generous, and far-seeing, provided in his will that three hundred pounds were to be given toward the erection of a building which he calls a "market-place," "with some convenient room or two for the courts to meet in both in summer and winter, and so for the townsmen and commissioners in the same building or the like, and a convenient room for a library, and a gallery, or some other handsome 100m for the ciders to meet in; also a room for an armory." He wrote in his will several pages in regard to "an armory and the meeting of the Artillery," and " providing a place therefor" in the proposed edifice. He gave five pounds "to this Artillery Company of Boston" to be laid out in pikes and bandoleers; five pounds toward erecting a platform for two mounted pieces for the Company, at which the "Captain of the Great Artillery" was to instruct scholars in the use of guns once in a week or fortnight for two or three hours. Also be gave to the Artillery Company two heilfers or cows, the profit of these to be laid out in powder or bullets, etc., yearly. He made it his dying request to "our first Artillery Company" that they might know that his "earnest endeavors and desires are to promote and encourage the interests of this country," and that already this company hath raised up well experienced soldiers. He also said that it would be his rejoicing if there could be any means thought on or used to increase and encourage this Company that ft may be honorable and advantageous to the whole country, and that it may remain and continue still in splendor and esteem. Toward no other interest or purpose docs Capt. Keayne (1637), in his will, manifest such a paternal anxiety and deep concern as toward "The Military Company of the Massachusetts," now called the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company. All this in explanation of lib gift, "with much repetition and amendment," is set forth in his will. Capt. Keayne (1637) died "on the 23d of the 1st month [March], 1655-6." In February next following, the selectmen began to take action respecting the legacy of Capt. Keayne (1637), and at the town meeting in March. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Military Company of the Massachusetts, Now Called the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts, 1637 1888, Vol. 1: 1637 1738 The present volume has been prepared under many difficulties, and it does not reach that state of completeness which the writer fondly desired. The total loss of the records of the first sixty years of the Company; the incompleteness of early family and town records the different spellings of the same name; the identification of a person who lived two hundred years ago, there being two and sometimes more persons of the same name in the same locality, have multiplied the difficulties and chances of error. Such conditions call for wise judgment, and the writer has used the best he had. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
