Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Handwriting of the Kings Queens of England The greater part of this work appeared in the pages of the Leisure Hour during the years 1889 and 1891, but some of the most interesting examples of royal penmanship, here figured, have not before been made public: indeed, their existence was unknown until recently, when they were discovered, amongst some uncalendared documents at the Public Record Office, by Mr. H. C. Maxwell Lyte, C. B., the present Deputy-Keeper of the Records, by whose kindness, in pointing them out to me, and in giving me permission to have photographs taken of them, I am enabled to include them here. These new discoveries include some words written by Richard II; a letter wholly in the handwriting of Henry IV; a curious form of the signature of Henry VI, which shows that he used a wood-block stamp with his name upon it; and a long sentence penned by Edward IV of whose writing no example, except the ordinary 'E. R., ' was known to exist. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The King and the Commons: Cavalier and Puritan Song This little pleasure-book of English vein attempts to blend the voices of true poets who lived in the time of Charles I. and the Commonwealth, into a genuine expression of the manner of their music and the spirit of their time. During the first seven years of the reign of Charles I. all the poets who are here to be heard singing were alive together. In the next year George Herbert passed away; then Randolph; then, in the middle of the reign, Ben Jonson; Carew next; and in its latter years, besides Quarks and Ford, three died in early manhood -Suckling, Cartwright, and Habington. Drummond's death followed close upon the King's; Crashaw lived only into the next year; Lovelace and Cleveland did not survive the Commonwealth; while Milton and Andrew Marvell, Waller, Davenant, Butler, Denham, Cowley, with George Wither, whose age was sixty at the end of the reign of Charles I., lived on into the time of Charles II.
