During these operations at sea, hardly any hostilities occurred between the besiegers and besieged; the former had suspended their bombardment, and the latter, finding that their cannon-shots were not answered, judged it advisable to husband their powder, and had leisure to meditate on their sad condition. Invested for ten months, frequently on the verge of starvation, thinned by fatigue, watching, and wounds, they had already buried 1500 soldiers; the town was in ruins, and they lived amongst the mire and water of their ditches, exposed to the inclemency of a rigorous season, without shoes and in tattered clothing.
