Download or read book History of the Commonwealth of England Vol 2 written by William Godwin and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Commonwealth of England, Vol. 2: From Its Commencement, to the Restoration of Charles the Second The chronicle of their successors divides itself under two heads: first, to explain in what manner they contrived to clear away all obstacles, and obtain an adequate area for reducing their speculations into practice; and secondly, to shew how they fashioned and conducted their republic, after the preliminaries were effected. In the first of these, the greater degree of subtlety was required; in the second the greater portion of original talent and genius was displayed. The obscure labour of the architect, which precedes the laying the first stone and erecting the shell of his edifice, will frequently be found not less memorable and worthy of record, than all the success and splendour of execution, which are more adapted to awaken the admiration of the many. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the British Commonwealth, Vol. 2 of 2: The Modern Commonwealth (1763 to 1919) Nor is this the only difficulty which the writing of recent history presents. The task of writing the first volume was greatly simplified by the fact that, in the main, I had to follow a beaten track, trodden by many previous writers, who had established what may be called an orthodox View as to the significance and the relative importance of events. In the present volume I have lacked this aid; for though a vast deal has been written about almost every aspect of the subject, the results have not yet been digested into a received and coherent view. Indeed, so far as I am aware, there is no book in which an attempt has been made to draw together, in their just relations, all the subjects which have seemed to me to be essential parts of my theme. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Commonwealth of England, Vol. 4: From Its Commencement, to the Restoration of Charles the Second The history of the reign of Cromwel is a difficult theme, and has not been treated by any writer who has endeavoured to develop its intricacies, and trace effects to their causes. He abruptly dissolved the parliaments of 1654 and l656, contrary to the earnest remonstrances of Whitlocke. He is affirmed tyrannically to have dismissed from their offices three of the judges of the land; and he sent three eminent counsel to the Tower, merely, as it should seem, for doing justice to the cause of their client He imposed taxes and made laws, solely by his own authority and that of his council. He arbitrarily deprived of their seats one hundred members of his last parliament, and instituted another house, or house of lords, composed, it is said, of the dregs of the people. All these appear to be the acts of a madman. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
