This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Church of England From 1660 English Church from the restoration of the monarchy and the passing of the Act of Uniformity down to a period which most of us remember, and at which all the chief questions that now agitate the Church had already come into distinct prominence, and might be regarded as burning. I was not made aware of the existence of the very elaborate essays of Abbey and Overton, until a great part of this book was already in type, and consequently it was altogether out of my power to make any more than mere verbal alterations. I will, therefore, content myself with remarking that their work is of a different character from mine, and intended for a different class of readers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of England The history of the English Church begins with the conversion to Christianity of the English people. There were already Chris tians in all parts of Great Britain; where the English had conquered and settled there was a minority of serfs; elsewhere a Celtic population that was either independent or under English domination. But these Chris tians were to have, at the utmost, an influence upon English Christianity; they were not to control its structure or its character. Download or read book The History of the Reformation of the Church of England Vol 7 Classic Reprint written by Gilbert Burnet and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 7 The publication of the History of the Reformation seems to have been first suggested to its author by the appearance of the new French translation of Sanders' book de origine ac progressu Schismatis Anglicani. This work had been printed at Cologne in 1585, and had passed through several editions, and been translated into French in 1587. Upon the publication of the new translation by Maucroix at Paris in 1676, the author was diverted from the proposal made to him by Sir William Jones to undertake the history of England, and induced to write this History in answer to Sanders' work, which, he says, was at that time much cried up in France. At the time when he commenced his work he had, as he remarks in his Reflections on Atterbury, p. 25, had no sort of practice in our records, but took no small pains and charge for three years together in searching for materials, and submitted himself to the direction and advice of Bishop Stillingfleet, Sir John Marsham, and Mr. Petyt. He was at first unable to procure admittance into Sir John Cotton's library. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2016-09-22 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Religion in England The Religion of England - Ever since the English were a nation, their religion has been. That of the Catholic Church of Christ. From the time that the Angles, Saxons, and J utes became Christians to the Reformation, from the sixth to the sixteenth century, all religious people in England were members of the Church. Since the Reformation other religious bodies have sprung into existence, some of them differing slightly, some very materially, from the Church; have attracted to themselves numbers of earnest and devout people; and have exercised a cor responding influence, from time to time, upon the government and policy of England. Still the majority of Englishmen have always remained members of the Church, and consequently the History of Religion in England is mainly the History of the Church of England. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Church of England: Pre-Reformation Period It is to be presumed that a reason may be assigned for every book which is written. It may not always be evident to the reader, but the author must be conscious of some cause which moved him to write. In the present instance the moving cause was the lack of any work which seemed to the writer to trace the long story of the Church of England with sufficient brevity and sufficient fulness. Dry epitomes there are in abundance. Scholarly researches into the most remote past come forth year by year. The history of portions of the long centuries, or personal narrative, has been often written with appreciative genius. But there seemed more than room for a connected narrative which might be useful to one who is commencing acquaintance with English Church history, and which might also possess sufficient interest for the general reader. The Church of England is at once old and new. It has been reformed, but its heritage has come down to it through more than a millennium. Book A Short History of the Church of England Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short History of the Church of England Classic Reprint written by J. F. Kendall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Church of England Christian faith was brought to its people. But by whose enthusiasm this bringing of the Faith came about it is impossible to say. There is an old legend that Joseph of Arimathea came with twelve companions and settled at Glastonbury, and in the ground there planted his staff, which budded and grew into the famous Holy Thorn. That beautiful story, however, is only first heard of many hundred years after S. Joseph was dead. The cause which most likely led to the heathen Britons being taught the faith was an outbreak of bitter persecution which fell upon the Christians in South - Eastern Gaul in the year 177. Just as we read in the New Testament that by reason of the persecution of Stephen, Philip and others were scattered abroad, so, too, in all probability as a result of the persecu tion at Lyons and Vienne, fugitives fled along the great Roman roads to cross the Channel and hide in Britain, as in an earlier day fugitives from the rule of Julius Caesar had also done. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Turning Points of English Church History The plan of this little book is, not to give a connected history of the Church of England, but to put before the reader some of its principal points, especially those which will help him to understand the Church questions of the present day. It has not been thought necessary in such a sketch as this to quote authorities but it may be desirable to state that pains have been taken to make the work accurate and impartial. To secure this the more effectually, the writer is permitted to say, that the proof sheets have been carefully revised by the Rev. W. Stubbs, Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford, one of our greatest authorities on ecclesiastical history. He is not to be held answerable for any opinions the work may contain, but his corrections and suggestions have added to its value, and his supervision will give the reader confidence in its general correctness.
