Book Historic Sketches of the Cattle Trade Of the West and Southwest

Download or read book Historic Sketches of the Cattle Trade Of the West and Southwest written by Joseph G. McCoy and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-08-28 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph G. McCoy was a cattle rancher who forged a career spanning decades in the westerly frontiers of North America. This book contains Joseph's recollections of his career and major events in his life. The life of a livestock trader and herder in the nineteenth century was not easy; dangers abounded in lands which were newly charted. Organizing an efficient and profitable business in such conditions was no easy feat; ranchers had to be physically tough and determined, as well as capable with overseeing and operating a farm. The frequent threat of cattle theft - a common occurrence in the frontier lands - meant security was an added concern. We also receive a history of Kansas, whereby we learn of the state's steady development. The growth of the population, the establishment of banks and storefronts, and the arrival of the railroads were all landmarks of progress in McCoy's home state.

THE EARLY DAYS .': IT IS a far cry from the S. M. S. Ranch in 1920 to the five-board fence on my father's little farm, near Leavenworth, Kans., where I sat fifty years ago (in 1870) watching the first herd of Texas cattle that I had ever seen. They were driven into an adjoining pasture, and as I look back through the vista of men, methods and events that have filled that gap in the evolution of the cattle industry I am reminded that The Breeder's Gazette in asking me to review that period from a personal standpoint may not have realized how full of it I am, or how much space would be required to tell the story, which must necessarily be rambling. I shall not attempt to write history in chronological order. As Henry Watterson, in some wonderful stories of men and events, in his "Looking Backward" series, wrote of characters and events of interest rather than orderly history, so I wish I might use the general title of his recollections, because my own will be simply the memories of "looking backward," and yet I shall try to reach the time when the past steps upon the threshold of the present. Harking back to the boy of 10 years on the board fence, I recall that the cattle were from the King Ranch, and had been shipped from Abilene, Kans., which was then the great objective of Texas trail herds: and the...

Book The Trampling Herd The Story of the Cattle Range in America

Download or read book The Trampling Herd The Story of the Cattle Range in America written by Paul I. Wellman and published by Rare Treasure Editions. This book was released on 2021-11-10T15:03:00Z with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Trampling Herd is a record of the US cattle industry. From Cortez and the first cattle, on through the days of the Mexican vaquero to the modern cowbody and dude wrangler, Paul Wellman traced the history and personalities of the Western cattle country. He showed the changing West, dating from the barbed wire fences and the sheepmen, the new laws regarding water rights and he brings his tale down to the last ignominy, the dude ranches. Cattle crossed the Rio Grande into what is now the United States as early as 1580, forty years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. In this colorful and comprehensive history of the cattle industry in the American West, we reach back to the early sixteenth century, when the first cattle were brought from Spain to Mexico. We then learn about the great cattle drives that began after the Civil War when Texans desperately needed to expand their markets, and about the dramatic changes in the cattle industry that followed. Colorful true characters like the unforgettable Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, Wild Bill Hickok, and Billy the Kid also all make prominent appearances in this fascinating history.
