Download or read book History of the Catholic Church in Zambia written by Hugo F. Hinfelaar and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tome tracing one hundred years of the history of the Catholic Church in Zambia from its beginnings in 1891 when the first missionaries from France arrived in the north of the country, until its establishment as one of the major Christian churches. It examines the impact of the upheavals of the First and Second World Wars and their effects on the missionary movement. It explores the church's aim to establish a sustainable local church community, the difficulties and opposition encountered, the amalgamation of the Catholic Church in Zambia into the international movement, and the Pope's visit in 1989. The author of this book went to Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) in 1958 and worked as a White Father missionary in the Northern and Central Provinces. He has made a wider academic contribution in the research and documentation of theology and religious-cultural studies, in Zambia, of which this publication is a further example.

Book Historical Dictionary of Zambia

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Zambia written by Bizeck Jube Phiri and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zambia is a nation with a long record of peace, that has enjoyed decades of constitutional rule, and even, in recent years, an increasingly competitive democracy. Peace, constitutionalism, democracy, and nationhood face constant challenges, such as in the elections of 2006 when the ugly language of ethnic confrontation found renewed currency. Moreover, Zambia's economic record and prospects are less equivocal: after over four decades, per capita incomes are lower than they were at the dawn of independence. Historical Dictionary of Zambia, Fourth Edition contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has more than 1,000 cross-referenced entries on important personalities as well as aspects of the country’s politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Zambia.

Book Education in Zambia

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brendan Patrick Carmody
  • Publisher : African Books Collective
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 236 pages

Download or read book Education in Zambia written by Brendan Patrick Carmody and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 1999 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book fills a gap by providing a much-needed history of Catholic missionary education in Zambia. It traces the contribution of the Catholic Church's contribution to the development of education in Zambia over more than a century, providing more widely, an overview of Zambia's educational history, and insights into the development of the country's political history. It articulates the perspectives of missionaries and officials of education departments, of Zambian students, lecturers and administrators. The study further vividly illustrates how the mission school generated creative tension between modernity and education, and Christian conversion; and analyses the psychological impacts of religious conversion and how these have been played out in Zambia. It argues that in the circumstances, Catholic schools have been instruments of liberation in Zambia, but duly recognises the ambiguities of modernisation, and the need to respect and acknowledge the riches of local tradition.

Book Historical Dictionary of Zambia

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Zambia written by David John Simon and published by Historical Dictionaries of Africa. This book was released on 2008 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many respects, Zambia is an African success story. From a territory whose borders were drawn with minimal attention either to the ethnic geography of the day or to natural features that combined (and sometimes divided) dozens of distinct ethnic groups, rose a nation with a long record of peace that has enjoyed decades of constitutional rule, and even, in recent years, an increasingly competitive democracy. Perhaps most improbably, the country has forged a national identity. Unfortunately, peace, constitutionalism, democracy, and nationhood constantly face challenges, such as in the elections of 2006 when the ugly language of ethnic confrontation found renewed currency. Moreover, Zambia's economic record and prospects have been on the decline. After over four decades, per capita incomes are lower than they were at the dawn of independence, and 95 percent of its people live on less that $2 per day. Despite repeated efforts to diversify the economy, copper exports and foreign assistance are the main sources of the vast majority of Zambia's foreign exchange earnings. And most devastating at all, the AIDS pandemic has already lowered the average life expectancy below 40. For a country one might regard as "heading in the right direction," Zambia has a long way to go. The third edition of Historical Dictionary of Zambia, through its chronology, introductory essay, appendixes, map, bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on important persons, places, events, and institutions and significant political, economic, social, and cultural aspects, provides an important reference on this African country.

Book History of the Zambia Baptist Association 1905 2005

Download or read book History of the Zambia Baptist Association 1905 2005 written by L. Frey and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2020-11-17 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much good academic work has been done on the mainline churches in many African countries. But less so on the "smaller" missions and the churches that they founded. This book describes the history of one of the "smaller" churches the Zambia Baptist Association with its roots in Malawi (1905) and its missionary connections to England, South Africa, Sweden, Australia and finally to the Liebenzell Mission in Germany. It is thus one of the many contributions needed for the writing of a history of the Evangelical churches of Africa.

Book One Zambia Many Histories

Download or read book One Zambia Many Histories written by Jan-Bart Gewald and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-06-25 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to the rich tradition of academic analysis and understanding of the pre-colonial and colonial history of Zambia, the trajectory of post-colonial Zambia has been all but ignored by historians. The assumptions of developmentalism, the cultural hegemony of United National Independence Party orthodoxy and its conflation with national interests, and a narrow focus on Zambia’s diplomatic role in Southern African affairs, have all contributed to a dearth of studies centring on the diverse lived experiences of Zambians.
