Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Bohemian and Moravian Brethren Christianity gradually Spread from Moravia into Bohemia but, in the latter country, those who received the gospel suffered cruel persecu tions, from their countrymen who continued in heathenism. Their places of worship were shut up; preachers were prohibited from teaching and, for more than ten years, they endured every kind of cruelty and Oppression, until they were relieved by the interposition of the emperor Otho i. But he only interposed with the design of subjecting them to the Church of Rome, and from that period another contest arose, which lasted for several centuries. One event which contributed much to advance the Romish religion in that country, was a visit of the sister of the grand duke of Bohemia to Rome. The bishops and priests She had hitherto seen in Bohemia lived in humility and poverty, like their Master, and were diligently employed in teaching the people in their native tongue, without pomp or ostentation; but the splen dour of the papal court, and the Latin worship. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in Bohemia: Sketches of Bohemian Religious History Religious History to the reader, I must premise that it is not the object of the present work to give a full and complete history of the country, either political or religious. Such an undertaking would require far more research and far more abundant materials than in the present case it is possible to bestow and to obtain. The aim of the work before us is much simpler and more circumscribed. Happening to meet, some years ago, with an old chronicle much prized by the Moravian Church on the Continent, I thought that the substance of its narrative would be interesting and valuable, and probably new to most readers, and accordingly made an abridged and free translation of the principal part. Book The Demuth Family and the Moravian Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Demuth Family and the Moravian Church Classic Reprint written by C. F. Battershell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-11-28 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Demuth Family and the Moravian Church The history of the Demuth family is closely connected with that of the renewed Moravian Church. The name is in the list of charter members of the mother church. There were three families of Demuths represented in the community at Herrnhut when the Unitas Fratrum was given a new lease of life through the instrumen tality of Count Zinzendorf. There were Demuths among the pilgrims who came to Georgia and to Pennsylvania to blaze mission trails in the forests of pre-revolutionary America. Demuths served in the Revolutionary War and the graves of two of them are near the two memorial monuments in the Moravian Cemetery at Gnaden hutten, Ohio. Many Demuths and their descendants are still active members of the renewed Moravian Church, or Unitas Fratrum. It is fitting and proper that they and their posterity should know the full story of the Bohemian Brethren and become familiar with the ancient origins of the Moravian Church. The following sonnet en titled, The Young Patriot, by Frances Hall, is to the point. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I feel under special obligation to the critical review of it in the Moravian, the Editor of which, Rev. Download or read book The Moravians on the Cuyahoga written by P. H. Kaiser and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Moravians on the Cuyahoga: Address Delivered Before the Western Reserve Historical Society Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen: [Recently, in company with the President of this Society and others I visited the locality to which attention is to be especially directed at this time, and then chanced to mention to him the fact of my own Moravian parentage and ancestry, and to this circumstance, in part at least, I attribute the honor of being requested by him to prepare the paper which I now present.] To write strictly and literally of "The Moravians on the Cuyahoga," would be to limit this paper to a period of time so short, and to a people so few, that the subject might fail to enlist that attention to which it is justly entitled. Such a treatment of the topic would divest it of that historic setting which alone gives interest to places, people and events. Independent and isolated facts have little significance, and are utterly devoid of of that didactic force which makes history the greatest teacher of mankind. Events can be intelligently and profitably studied only in connection with those antecedent occurrences which were, so to speak, their historic progenitors. The Moravian Church is one of the products of that great struggle in Europe which culminated in that social and ecclesiastic upheaval known as "The Protestant Reformation" This venerable organization, however, antedates the Reformation by well-nigh a century. For it had its origin about the middle of the fifteenth century among the followers of the Bohemian reformer and martyr, John Huss. Book A History of Bohemian Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Bohemian Literature Classic Reprint written by Francis Lutzow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Bohemian Literature With the approval of Mr. Gosse, I have written this short History of Bohemian Literature according to a plan that differs considerably from that of certain earlier volumes in this Series. The works of Modern English, French, Italian, and even of Ancient Greek and Spanish writers, will be known to many readers of the volumes that deal with them. Bohemian literature, on the other hand, is absolutely unknown in Western Europe, antl a large amount of space has therefore been devoted to translated quotations from Bohemian writers. Many of these unknown works have great interest and value. Bohemian literature, as we possess it, is to a certain extent disappointing and unsatisfactory. In consequence of the wholesale destruction of everything written in Bohemian that continued during more than a century, countless Bohemian books, many of which are known to have been valuable, have disappeared. Many forms of literature are scarcely represented in Bohemian. No dramatic works worthy of notice exist before the present century. Poetry also is valuable only in the earliest period and in the present century. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-11-05 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early History of the Church of the United Brethren (Unitas Fratrum) Commonly Called Moravians: In North America, A. D. 1734-1748 A careful study 'of a mass of documents, preserved In the Archives of the Moravian settlements, has furnished us with many interesting facts in reference to the early history of Pennsylvania, and especially its eastern Counties, which we believe will prove of general interest to intelligent readers in any denomination. Our object, therefore, is not to write exclusively for the members of that Church to which we belong, and which we cherish and esteem as the Church of our fathers and a chosen instrument in the hand of the Lord, by which, especially in olden times, much good was effected in this country but, whilst we shall not try to hide our respect for the early Moravian fathers in this country, we will endeavor to relate carefully collected facts in such a manner that our pages may become inter esting and instructive to all who take any interest in historical truth. Book Bohemia s Claim for Freedom Classic Reprint

Download or read book Bohemia s Claim for Freedom Classic Reprint written by Jindich Procházka and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bohemia's Claim for Freedom T is to be feared that the average educated Englishman knows very little about Bohemia. Very likely he would never have known even that it has no sea-coast if Shakespeare had not inadvertently said that it bad. But the present war is teaching the English what their school masters, for some reason, have never taught them - a little history and geography. And the ancient though fallen kingdom of Bohemia, like the ancient though fallen kingdom of Poland, is likely to play a considerable part in the coming resurrection of the nations. Austria has been to Bohemia, as to Poland, an influence almost more unpardonable than that of the savages of Prussia, not because she did worse, but because she knew better. Austria built, and is still building, her power upon the ruin of Christian countries which have been her own bulwarks against the heathen. As she repaid the rescue by Sobiesky with annexation, and the Crusade of Servia with conspiracy, so she owed her possession of Bohemia to the Moslem victory at Mohacz. Austria has never grudged the blood of her neighbours in defence of her religion. But the Prussianised Austria of to-day is confronted in Bohemia and elsewhere with something which the Prussianised spirit can never understand - the te juvenation of defeat. An English neo-pagan poet said that only one god had ever died: but he might have added that only one has ever risen from the dead. This conception of the birth thatbegins in death is inconceivable to the northern barbarian; and the immortality of the martyred nations bewilders and confounds him. These small Christian States not only survive defeat, but celebrate defeat. They date from defeat; not, like the heathens ab urbe cozzdz'ta, but rather ab arbe capta. The Bohemian song and proverb says, More was lost on Mohacz's field, as the English (perhaps recalling their naval adven tures) say, \vorse things happen at sea. And a modern Servian sculptor is planning a colossal monument for the scene of the Servian ruin at Kosovo. The Prussians have no colossal monu ment upon the field of Jena.
