Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Battle of Lake Erie on 10 September 1813 is considered by many to be the most important naval confrontation of the War of 1812. Made famous by the American fleet commander Oliver Hazard Perry's comment, "We have met the enemy and they are ours," the battle marked the U.S. Navy's first successful fleet action and was one of the rare occasions when the Royal Navy surrendered an entire squadron. This book draws on British, Canadian, and American documents to offer a totally impartial analysis of all sides of the struggle to control the lake. New diagrams of the battle are included that reflect the authors' modification of traditional positions of various vessels. The book also evaluates the strategic background and tactical conduct of the British and the Americans and the command leadership exercised by Perry and his British opponent, Commander Robert H. Barclay. Not since James Fenimore Cooper's 1843 book on the subject has the battle been examined in such detail, and not since Alfred Thayer Mahan's 1905 study of the war has there been such a significant reinterpretation of the engagement. First published in hardcover in 1997, the book is the winner of the North American Society for Oceanic History's John Lyman Book Award.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Battle of Lake Erie: September 10, 1813 and Reminiscences of the Flagships "Lawrence" And "Niagara" In offering this pamphlet to the public, it may be deemed necessary to offer some apology. There have been many accounts of Perry's Victory, Sept. 10th, 1813, published. Yet in consequence of the unfortunate feud existing between Perry and Elliott and their friends, the accounts partook somewhat of an ex parte character. This is not a correct way to hand down passing events to posterity. In writing history, facts should be given as nearly as possible, not fiction. My father, Sailing Master Daniel Dobbins, was a pioneer in the construction of the squadron, and served actively upon the upper lakes during the war. From conversations during his lifetime, as also memoranda and other papers left by him - in connection with the accounts given by McKenzie, Cooper and Lossing, I have compiled this little book. I hope the reader will excuse the commonplace style of composition, as it is the effort of an illiterate sailor. Book The Men of the Lake Erie Squadron 1813 1825

Download or read book The Men of the Lake Erie Squadron 1813 1825 written by Eric Eugene Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2022-11-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Battle of Lake Erie, which was fought near Put-in-Bay, Ohio on 10 September 1813, is ingrained in American history. This battle was not the only naval battle that was fought on the Upper Great Lakes during the War of 1812, but it is the most famous of these battles. The U.S. Navy did not withdraw from Lake Erie Station after the battle, but continued to protect America's interests on the Upper Great Lakes until 1825 when the Lake Erie Station at Erie, Pennsylvania was permanently closed. Approximately 1,336 men serves in this squadron between 1813 and 1825. The squadron was not only made up of men from the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps, but also from volunteers form the U.S. Army and the militia forces of Kentucky, Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania. At least sixty African Americans and one Native American served in the squadron. The 'lost' muster rolls of the men who served during the Battle of Lake Erie on 10 September 1813 have been recreated in this work by using a variety of sources. These sources include the muster rolls from the ships and naval stations that sent men to Lake Erie, from U.S. Army and militia muster rolls, from the prize list a causality (sic) list from this battle, from the British Admiralty's American prisoner of war records, and from naval books and county histories. The primary focus of this book is to identify the men who served at the Lake Erie Station, and not to present the readers a complete history of the battles and the ships. The secondary focus is to dispel the many myths and legends associated with the Battle of Lake Erie. The book is genealogical in nature in order to help researchers in discovering their ancestor's naval participation on the Upper Great Lakes during and after the War of 1812."--Page 4 of cover.

This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battle of Lake Erie, September 10, 1813 Before the opening of the next campaign on the lake frontier, in 1813, the American authorities fortunately awoke to the fact that any further movement for the recapture of Detroit and the invasion of Canada would have to depend upon the naval control of Lake Erie, and that that in turn depended in a large measure. Upon their own superiority on Lake Ontario. A plan was there fore urged by Commodore Chauncey which, being duly acted upon by the combined naval and military forces, resulted in the capture of the important British positions at York and Fort George, and in the evacuation by the enemy of their controlling defences opposite Buffalo. The first two steps in Chauncey's program had now been successfully taken. The British had been driven from the Niagara River, and the vessels at Black Rock at last were free to move. Preparations had already been made before hand in anticipation of a victory, and the minute the enemy, in their retreat, abandoned Fort Erie, Perry was on hand to hasten the departure. With great physical labor, the vessels were tracked by oxen up against the current of the Niagara, here set ting heavily toward the falls. On May 27 the British evacuated the opposite shore; on June 12 the vessels were above the rapids, but even then this could not have been accomplished had not the sailors had the assistance of several hundred soldiers furnished by Dearborn. These circumstances well show how hopeless the task would have been had the enemy remained in possession of Fort Iirie.
