Book excerpt: Richard Biddle Irwin relays the history of the famous XIX Corps, a unit in the Union Army famed for its successes and daring during the American Civil War. This edition includes the original battlefield maps. A series of daring victories swiftly established the special reputation of the Nineteenth. At the height of their prowess, the company demonstrated great martial skill during the Siege of Port Hudson and in Shenandoah Valley. Notably, the Nineteenth had a large contingent of black soldiers; many performed with particular bravery and finesse in combat, and Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks - to whom the unit was first attached - gave due praise. After they were raised in New Orleans, the Nineteenth Corps were set to skirmish in the rough, boggy terrain of rural Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. Harsher than the northerly lands, it was here that they cut their teeth, polished their skills and gained a certain edge over their counterparts stationed in easier climes. After a few months they were set to besiege Port Hudson; a lengthy process that helped hone the troop's patience, appreciation for sound strategy and capacity for valiance. After the eventual surrender of the Port, the Nineteenth was enrolled in the Union initiative known as the Red River Campaign. Though a failure owing to poor strategy and conflict between those in high command, the Nineteenth fought bravely. Losing many of their number but inflicting casualties the Confederates could ill afford, the Nineteenth eventually retreated and were stationed in Savannah, Georgia. Perhaps the most famous association the XIX Corps has today is with General Sheridan at the Third Battle of Winchester. A fierce conflict that took many lives, officers and troopers alike suffered badly. However, historians including Irwin view this as a crucial turning point - the Nineteenth's valiance in the face of such carnage was distinctive. Irwin's accounts are thorough and meticulous, yet he never loses sight of the dramatic and exciting nature of the subject. He takes us through the journey of the Nineteenth from a raw, inexperienced unit into a force of fierce, disciplined and tactically adept veterans. This edition contains his original battlefield maps and charts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the Nineteenth Army Corps, like that of by far the greater number of the organizations of like character, in which were arrayed the great armies of volunteers that took up arms to maintain the Union, is properly the history of all the troops that at any time belonged to the corps or served within its geographical limits. To be complete, then, the narrative my comrades have asked me to write must go back to the earliest service of these troops, at a period before the corps itself was formally established, and must continue on past the time when the earlier territorial organization became merged or lost and the main body of the corps was sent into the Shenandoah, down to the peace, and the final muster of the last regiment. If hitherto less known and thus less considered than the proud record of those great corps of the Armies of the Potomac, of the Tennessee, and of the Cumberland, on whom in the fortune of war fell the heat and burthen of so many pitched battles, whose colors bear the names of so many decisive victories, yet the story of the Nineteenth Army Corps is one whose simple facts suffice for all that need to told or claimed of valor, of achievement, of sacrifice, or of patient endurance. I shall, therefore, attempt neither eulogy nor apology, nor shall I feel called upon to undertake to criticise the actions or the failures of the living or the dead, save where such criticism may prove to be an essential part of the narrative. From the brows of other soldiers, no one of us could ever wish to pluck the wreaths so dearly won, so honorably worn; yet, since the laurel grows wild on every hill-side in this favored land, we may without trespass be permitted to gather a single spray or two to decorate the sacred places where beneath the cypresses and the magnolias of the lowlands of Louisiana, or under the green turf among the mountains of Virginia, reposes all that was mortal of so many thousands of our brave and beloved comrades. This volume contains no illustrations

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army of the Potomac’s First Corps was one of the best corps in the entire Union army. In September 1862, it was chosen to spearhead the Union attack at Antietam, fighting Stonewall Jackson’s men in the Cornfield and at the Dunker Church. In July 1863 at Gettysburg, its men were the first Union infantry to reach the battle, where they relieved the cavalry and fought off the Confederate onslaught all day before retreating to Cemetery Hill. Their valiant stand west of Gettysburg saved the Union from disaster that day but came at great cost (60 percent casualties). The corps was disbanded the following spring, having bled itself out of existence. The First Corps’ leadership included two generals who would rise to command the Army of the Potomac—Joseph Hooker and George Meade—and a third who refused that command, John Reynolds, often considered the best commander in the East until his death at Gettysburg. The corps was made up heavily of men from New York and Pennsylvania (including the famous Bucktails), with a handful of New England regiments and the Midwesterners of the Iron Brigade, perhaps the Civil War’s most famous Union brigade. Corps histories remain one of the last gaps in Civil War military history. Hundreds of regimental histories have been written since war’s end, many brigades have been covered, the armies have been explored . . . but corps remain relatively overlooked—not because they are an unimportant or unappealing subject, but because mastering the subject is so difficult, requiring knowledge of many commanders’ careers, dozens of constituent units, and many battles. Few are willing to tackle the subject. Lucky for us, Darin Wipperman has taken on the task and produced a monumental history of the Army of the Potomac’s First Corps, well written and deftly told, an exciting story in itself and, like all great unit histories, one that is representative of the many other corps in the Union army.

Book Black Union Soldiers in the Civil War

Download or read book Black Union Soldiers in the Civil War written by Hondon B. Hargrove and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2003-10-03 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book refutes the historical slander that blacks did not fight for their emancipation from slavery. At first harshly rejected in their attempts to enlist in the Union army, blacks were eventually accepted into the service--often through the efforts of individual generals who, frustrated with bureaucratic inaction in the face of dwindling forces, overrode orders from the secretary of war and the president himself. By the end of the war, black soldiers had numbered over 187,000 and served in 167 regiments. Seventeen were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, the nation's highest award for valor. Theirs was a remarkable achievement whose full story is here told for the first time.
