Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Rome, Vol. 3 The fall of the partriciate by no means divested the Roman commonwealth of its aristocratic character. We have already (i. 393) indicated that the plebeian party carried within it that character from the first as well as, and in some sense still more decidedly than, the patriciate; for, while in the old body of burgesses an absolute equality of rights prevailed, the new constitution set out from a distinction between the senatorial houses who were privileged in point of burgess rights and of burgess usufructs, and the mass of the other citizens. Immediately, therefore, on the abolition of the patriciate and the formal establishment of civic equality, a new aristocracy and a corresponding opposition were formed; and we have already shown how the former engrafted itself as it were on the fallen patriciate, and how, accordingly, the first movements of the new party of progress were mixed up with the last movements of the old opposition between the orders (i. 394). The formation of these new parties began in the fifth century, but they assumed their definite shape only in the century which followed. Download or read book History of Rome and of the Roman People Vol 3 written by Victor Duruy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Rome, and of the Roman People, Vol. 3: From Its Origin to the Invasion of the Barbarians; Section I I first wrote this history forty years ago. Time, study, ex perience in public affairs, - usus remm, - have not led me to alter the general lines of my first narrative. I think to-day, as I thought then, that Roman liberty had nothing in common with ours; and that the republicans on the banks of the Tiber were a narrow oligarchy, who, after having conquered the world, knew not how to govern it. Guy Patin once said to a First President that, if he himself had been in the Senate on the ides of March, he would have dealt the dictator his twenty-fourth dagger-thrust. This was a literary opinion which it was considered good taste to express, after the example of Cicero extolling the murder of Caesar, and at a time when the Frondeurs in Parliament imagined themselves Catos. The conquering cause which pleased the gods is still repugnant to a few men of letters in France; but in free England, as well as in Caesarian Germany, historical criticism now decides in favor of the gods. Book excerpt: Books VI-X of Livy's monumental work trace Rome's fortunes from its near collapse after defeat by the Gauls in 386 bc to its emergence, in a matter of decades, as the premier power in Italy, having conquered the city-state of Samnium in 293 bc. In this fascinating history, events are described not simply in terms of partisan politics, but through colourful portraits that bring the strengths, weaknesses and motives of leading figures such as the noble statesman Camillus and the corrupt Manlius vividly to life. While Rome's greatest chronicler intended his history to be a memorial to former glory, he also had more didactic aims - hoping that readers of his account could learn from the past ills and virtues of the city.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Rome and of the Roman People, Vol. 3: From Its Origin to the Invasion of the Barbarians; Section II This atrocity was the last act of the Gallic war. No struggle left greater memories in the ancient world. During these eight years, says Plutarch, Caesar stormed more than eight hundred towns, subdued three hundred nations, and conquered three millions of men, of whom a third perished on the battlefield, and another third were sold. It matters little if the figures are exaggerated: they show how the minds of the ancients were impressed by these gigantic combats. Gaul had an end worthy of the renown that so many victories and conquests had given her; and her sons may be permitted to honor that heroic resistance. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greatness and Decline of Rome, Vol. 3 Capitol. At the same time the leading members Of the aristo cratic party had recovered from their first bewilderment and were attempting to secure information concerning the con spirators Cicero, in the utmost excitement and anxiety, wrote a laconic note to Basilus, Offering his congratulations and asking what he and his friends proposed to do. Antony was no less anxious for immediate news; Who had killed Caesar and who should be consulted in so dangerous a crisis Thus messengers began to speed through the streets of Rome upon that afternoon, collecting news and carrying letters and messages in every direction. The discussion So profound an animosity towards Cmsar had been gathering in the capiml' in the depths Of men's minds during recent years, that it was not difficult to find a number of senators who were bold enough to accept the conspirators' invitation to the Capitol. Among them was Cicero, who arrived almost beside himself with de light; the excitement Of the crisis had at length aroused the weary and dissatisfied scholar from his long inactivity. Deliberations were at once begun. It was clear that the Senate must be assembled as soon as possible: the question then arose, who should convoke it. By the laws of the con stitution, this was the function of the surviving consul, and some senators proposed to apply to him: the idea was by no means so irrational as has been supposed by modern historians, who are too prone to forget that the conspirators could not criticise the proposal in the light of subsequent events. Only a few months earlier Antony, with Brutus, Cassius and Trebonius, had been a moderate Caesarean. He had eventually joined the Opposite faction; but his debts, the slights to which the dictator had exposed him, and the solicitations of his wife, Fulvia, might serve as his excuse and lead his former friends to hope that he would cease this temporary aberration now that Caesar was dead. Cicero, on the other hand, was delighted to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
