Book excerpt: Suzanne Gossett offers a full and critical performance history, with an introduction showing how the play's performance history has paralled the criticism. It then gives an interpretation of this two-generation romance, with its successive male and female central characters, based on a reading 'through the family', and influenced by the feminist and new historicist criticism of the last two decades. The edition integrates cumulative research on Shakespeare's collaborative authorship and the transmission of the text without rewriting the play or ignoring years of emendations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's History of Pericles, Prince of Tyre: Edited With Notes Shakespeare's part of this play is merely a rough sketch, which he seems to have thrown aside after making it; and this, like the inferior stuff used by another, or others, in finishing it for the stage, was wretchedly printed in the early editions. The text of all these is corrupt and confused almost beyond de scription. Many of the more manifest errors and imperfections were corrected by Malone, the first editor who gave the text serious attention. His successors have continued the work of emendation with varying success; but not a few passages have baffled all their efforts and must probably remain in hopeless, obscurity. The chief results of this scholarly labour are recorded in my notes. They have an interest for advanced stu dents and critical readers. Of course the play is never read in secondary schools, and seldom in the colleges or in Shakespeare clubs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Cambridge Shakespeare appeals to students worldwide for its up-to-date scholarship and emphasis on performance. The series features line-by-line commentaries and textual notes on the plays and poems. Introductions are regularly refreshed with accounts of new critical, stage and screen interpretations. Over the last two decades there has been a resurgence of theatrical interest in Shakespeare's Pericles, which has been rescued from comparative neglect and is now frequently performed. The editors reject the current orthodoxies, that the text is seriously corrupt and that the play is of divided authorship. They show how the 1609 quarto has features in common with the first quarto of King Lear, now widely regarded as being based on Shakespeare's manuscript. Likewise they regard the arguments concerning divided authorship as unproven and misleading. Instead they show the play to be a unified aesthetic experience.

Book excerpt: Pericles, Prince of Tyre is a play written (at least in part) by William Shakespeare and included in modern editions of his collected works despite some questions over its authorship, as it was not included in the First Folio. Many modern editors believe that Shakespeare is responsible for the main portion of the play after scene 9 that follows the story of Pericles and Marina, and that the first two acts, detailing the many voyages of Pericles, were written by a relatively untalented reviser or collaborator, possibly George Wilkins.
