The public generally recognizes its reliance on sight and fears its loss, but emphasis on eye and vision health, in general, has not been integrated into daily life to the same extent as other health promotion activities, such as teeth brushing; hand washing; physical and mental exercise; and various injury prevention behaviors. It took time and effort but the two ophthalmicprofessions, optometry and ophthalmology, found a rapprochement, at times still an uneasy one,but they now work cooperatively, making best use of their respective skills for the benefi t ofpatients. This book tells a fascinating story of the evolution of an important aspect of health carein Australia, and does so in the context of changing technology and a changing society.
