Book A History of New England Volume 2

Download or read book A History of New England Volume 2 written by Isaac Backus and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-09-03 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A historian who has been an actor in the events which he narrates, has peculiar advantages and disadvantages. He can write with more minuteness of detail, and with a fresher and more life-like coloring. He can write with more confidence, and, drawing from his own experience and observation, is in this respect more trustworthy. On the other hand, he is more liable to be warped by prejudice, to see only the excellences and none of the defects of those with whom he has been identified, and only the defects and none of the excellences of those to whom he has been opposed, to be a partizan rather than a judge, and to make his narration little more than the reflection of his personal opinions or his personal sympathy and affection, hostility and spite. "The Church History of Isaac Backus has all the above-named excellences. To a large extent he was an eye-witness of that which he describes; and where not an eye-witness, he placed himself in closest possible connection with it by personal acquaintance with the actors, and by immediate and most diligent and thorough examination of records and other evidence. While it may be too much to say that he absolutely avoided the defects above named, yet his sound judgment, his natural candor and honesty and his elevated Christian principle, have made him as nearly free from them as perhaps any author who has written in similar circumstances." --from the Editor's Preface

Book The History of New England Vol 2 of 3

Download or read book The History of New England Vol 2 of 3 written by James Truslow Adams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of New England, Vol. 2 of 3: Revolutionary New England, 1691-1776 The period from the Peace of Utrecht in 1713 to that of the decade from 1740 to 17 50 produced no striking personalities and few events Of compelling human interest. But though this may detract from the dramatic quality Of the period, it by no means diminishes its historical importance. In those years Of recovery from war, and of great economic expansion, we can see at work forces tending to develop democratic ideals in certain elements of the community, and foreshadowing the alignments and par ties of a later time. The decade from 1740 to 17 50 was marked by an intense quickening of thought and action, and SO impor tant was the change in the intellectual and social atmosphere following the extraordinary religious outburst at the opening of this Short period that I have named the chapter dealing with it The Great Divide (chapter IX). Book History of New England Vol 2 of 3

Download or read book History of New England Vol 2 of 3 written by John Gorham Palfrey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of New England, Vol. 2 of 3: During the Stuart Dynasty In this continuation of my History of New England, I have not seen reason to depart from the plan on which the First Volume was constructed. I may be judged to have given too much space to the contemporaneous history of England. But this will not, I think, be the opinion of such as have well considered to what a controlling extent New-England politics were affected by existing relations - whether of antagonism or sympathy, of apprehension or reliance - to principles, parties, and men, powerful in the parent country. Preceding and passing events in England seemed to me to be the indispensable background, on which the nearer objects of the picture were to be projected, in order to be seen in their right position. In justice to my view of the proper manner of composing history, it has been necessary for me to throw into notes a variety of details, which appeared to be fit accessories to the main narrative, but which, had I attempted to interweave them in it, would have interrupted its continuity. If I might presume to give advice to my readers, it would be that they should peruse each chapter without attending to the notes, and then recur to them in connection with those statements, in the text which they are respectively designed to fortify or to illustrate. A large portion of them will attract only the student who desires to know the authorities for my narration. Her first settlers, while yet in the discomforts of their log huts, watching with sleepless vigilance the lurking savage, made education and religion the first objects of interest, and reared the school-house and the sanctuary. Upon these great principles, - universal education and freedom of conscience, - they based the grand super structure they have reared at such cost. Material was being prepared for a great edifice, and it must be out, not from clay but solid granite. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
